Summary :

The Program Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, oversees the administration, periodic review, continued development, and overall effectiveness of the program. Manages instructional development, teaching performance, professional development, college and community service, and instructional management. Supervises didactic and clinical faculty.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Evaluates the performance of students regarding achievements in curriculum and activities, and makes necessary provisions to meet learning needs while evaluating students’ clinical performance: -Must be able to demonstrate and educate students on the working knowledge of equipment and safety practices in diagnostic medical sonography
  • Must be able to demonstrate and educate students on knowledge and skills needed to perform all ultrasound procedures per protocol and adjusts techniques according to patient needs, i.e., critical or emergency. Consults with providers as needed.
  • Provides practical instruction for students and other health care professionals.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and educate students on how to apply critical thinking skills and ensures order accuracy when triaging and prioritizing patients.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and educate students on how to complete documentation on time and accurately in accordance with department policy or procedure including proper image management and accurate documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and educate students on how to practice safety at all times, which includes adhering to ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles for proper radiation safety for team members and patients using mobilization and immobilization devices, following safe patient handling practices, following infection prevention practices (proper personal protective equipment), and following hand hygiene to comply with government agencies or other regulatory bodies.         
  • Coordinates recruitment, advising, and placement of students in the program.
  • Collaborates with other team members to create annual program goals and plans strategies to accomplish goals consistent with the DMS program mission and goals.
  • Coordinates and guides curriculum to include evaluation and revision of course instruction and materials.
  • Uses established course instruction and materials to prepare lecture outlines and notes based on course objectives and stated student learning outcomes.
  • Provides instruction in the classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical setting.
  • Designs examinations, quizzes, assignments, and projects. Constructs grading rubrics and grades student tests and projects promptly. Maintains notes, lectures, and grades electronically and completes all required reports in a timely manner.
  • Participates and/or has oversight of clinical visits and documentation of student performance and ensures completion of clinical evaluations with input from the clinical coordinator and/or other department team members and leaders.
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Serves as liaison between the program and clinical departments of sonography. Works with radiologists to monitor quality control and educate technologists as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of an accredited DMS training program, Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred
  • Certification in Diagnostic Medical Sonography by the ARDMS or ARRT
  • Have documented experience in supervision, instruction, evaluation, student guidance, and educational theories/techniques
  • A  minimum of five years clinical experience as a registered sonographer required
  • Basic Life Support certification within 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds without assistance
  • Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock
  • Occasional high noise level in work environment
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents
  • Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients • Use of computers throughout the work day
