    Job Summary

    New River Community and Technical College is seeking a part-time Academic Lab Instruction Assistant

    in Electrical Distribution Engineering Technology (EDET). This position is designed as a support role to

    the 12-month faculty member and assists with instructional delivery, laboratory and field activities,

    student skill development, equipment readiness, and day-to-day program operations. The position

    may provide limited classroom, lab, and field instruction as assigned and under the direction of

    program leadership.

    A primary responsibility of this position is providing instruction for the Heavy Equipment Training for

    Lineworkers course, including support with safe operation, demonstrations, skills practice, and

    student performance monitoring in alignment with college and industry safety expectations. The

    position also supports the broader EDET program by reinforcing safe work practices, professional

    conduct, and workforce readiness.

    The position requires the ability to travel.

    Nature of Work

    The Academic Lab Instruction Assistant reports directly to the Dean of Workforce, Technical, and

    Community Education and in close coordination with the 12-month EDET faculty member and

    Department Chairperson. The position is responsible for assisting with instruction, skills training,

    student supervision, lab and training yard preparation, record support, and other program functions

    necessary for effective instructional delivery. Teaching assignments may occur during daytime,

    evening, or weekend hours, depending on program need, but will not exceed 20 hours per week.

    Distinguishing Characteristics

    Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.

    Summary of Responsibilities:

    • Assist the 12-month faculty member with the delivery of classroom, lab, and field instruction

    within the EDET program.

    • Provide instruction for the Heavy Equipment Training for Lineworkers course, including

    demonstrations, student oversight, safety monitoring, and skills evaluation support.

    • Support hands-on training activities involving equipment, tools, materials, climbing gear, and

    field-based learning environments, as assigned.

    • Reinforce industry safety standards and safe operating procedures, including OSHA, DOT, and

    utility best practices relevant to assigned instructional duties.

    • Assist with student skills coaching in areas such as equipment operation, work-site

    awareness, rigging, material handling, and other entry-level lineworker competencies

    appropriate to course assignments.

    • Help prepare, organize, and maintain training areas, vehicles, tools, instructional equipment,

    and materials needed for daily instruction.

    • Support the monitoring of student attendance, participation, performance, and completion of

    required training activities.

    • Assist with evaluating student learning through performance demonstrations, practical

    activities, and instructor-directed assessments.

    • Maintain a professional learning environment that supports student success, safety,

    accountability, and teamwork.

    • Assist full-time faculty with program logistics, recruitment events, community outreach, and

    employer engagement activities, as needed.

    • Participate in meetings, trainings, and other assigned duties that support program operations

    and continuous improvement.

    • Perform other job-related duties as assigned in support of the EDET program and the college

    mission.

    Position may require travel between campuses.

    Skills/Abilities

    Outstanding organizational skills.

    The ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial.

    Ability to supervise, coordinate, and evaluate industrial training programs.

    Must possess excellent communication skills.

    Ability and willingness to market the program and classes to industry stakeholders and

    potential clients.

    Education

    The education, experience, aptitudes, skills, etc., for instructional positions differ by type of academic

    or vocational program. Refer to job announcements for specific job specifications.

    Experience

    In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required for

    this position. An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be

    acceptable.

    Five Years- Proven Full time employment experience directly related to electrical/communications distribution and line service technology.- Required

    Ten Years- Field experience or prior teaching/instructional experience preferably at the community college level.- Preferred

    License or Certification

    Valid Drivers License- Required

    Valid CDL- Preferred

    Certificate of Applied Science or equivalent in the field of line service technology- Required

    NCCER Instructor, OSHA 10,30- Preferred

    Ten years of experience in the line service industry- Preferred

    Teaching experience- Preferred
