Job Summary
The Library Educational Assistant provides instructional, clerical, and operational support within the school library media center under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher or librarian. This role focuses on delivering literacy support, reinforcing research and digital citizenship skills, managing library media resources, and maintaining a safe, inclusive learning environment. The assistant works with individual students, small groups, and whole-class activities to foster a love of reading and support academic success.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Licensure: Valid New Mexico Level III Educational Assistant License (or immediate ability to obtain).
Compliance: Must meet New Mexico PED and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) paraprofessional requirements.
Preference: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred for designated assignments.
Key Responsibilities
Library & Instructional Support
Reinforce teacher- or librarian-directed instruction during library activities and research sessions.
Assist students with book selection, database navigation, and technology-based learning tools.
Support district literacy, digital citizenship, and Title I programs as assigned.
Circulation & Inventory Management
Operate the library automation system to circulate books, equipment, and media materials.
Shelve books accurately using standard library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal).
- Process new library acquisitions (labeling, stamping, covering) and repair damaged materials
Student Supervision & Safety
Monitor student progress, behavior, and routines within the media center.
Supervise student transitions, recess, lunch, or other activities as assigned by administration.
Collaboration & Professionalism
Maintain strict student confidentiality in compliance with FERPA guidelines.
Follow the New Mexico Educator Code of Ethical Responsibility.
Complete clerical tasks, organize displays, and maintain an inviting, clean library space.
Physical Requirements & Environment
Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and shelving books.
Must be able to lift library materials and book crates to 25 pounds.
Work is primarily performed in school libraries, media centers, and computer labs.
Contingent upon successful completion of all district hiring requirements, including a criminal background clearance and employment eligibility verification.
