Position Information

Powering Safe Buildings for our Ohana

From designing to approving, bring your expertise to Honolulus building! The Department of Planning & Permitting (DPP), Building Division, Electrical Code Branch, is seeking an independent Electrical Engineer to review moderately difficult electrical plans and specifications, including those for multi-family dwellings, commercial structures, electric vehicle charging stations, and photovoltaic systems. In this role, you will ensure that the plans comply with accepted electrical engineering practices, applicable electrical codes, and pertinent ordinances.

  • Review electrical plans, specifications, and calculations for compliance with safety and code requirements
  • Work with architects, engineers, and the public to answer questions and ensure electrical designs meet code.
  • Work with electrical inspectors to ensure field installations match approved electrical plans and code requirements.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelors degree in an engineering specialty.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two (2) years of non-registered professional (post-bachelors degree) electrical engineering experience.

Desirable Electrical Engineering Experience:

  • Experience reviewing or designing electrical systems for buildings for building infrastructure
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and plan review processes

Applicable Skills Needed:

  • Ability to apply electrical engineering principles and practices

  • Proficiency in evaluating electrical system designs and methods

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply the National Electrical Code

  • Skill in reviewing electrical plans and specifications for buildings and structures

  • Strong ability to analyze electrical designs and verify technical computations for accuracy and safety

  • Experience preparing engineering reports and written correspondence

  • Proven ability to communicating effectively with engineers, architects, contractors, and the public

Substitution:

A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year college/university may be substituted for one year of non-registered professional electrical engineering experience. The substitution must be met at the time of the application in order to be considered. Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license, as required.
