Electrical Engineer – Substation

Position Overview
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer – Substation for a contract-to-hire opportunity with our client in Houston, TX. This position will support the engineering and design of new and modified high-voltage substations ranging from 13kV through 765kV.
Working under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, the Electrical Engineer will contribute to projects from conceptual design through construction, developing technical calculations, design packages, specifications, and other engineering deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Support high-voltage substation projects from conceptual design through completion.
- Develop substation design packages including physical layouts, above- and below-grade design, protective relaying and control, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, and security systems.
- Perform engineering calculations including AC station service, DC systems and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill, insulation coordination, and related studies.
- Prepare design sketches, equipment specifications, cost estimates, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
- Apply IEEE, NESC, utility, and other applicable industry standards and specifications.
- Support field inspections of substation facilities and equipment.
- Research and compile technical and project-related information.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, designers, and other disciplines to meet project schedules and deadlines.
- Identify and assist in resolving technical and design issues.
- Perform design quality reviews and support established QA/QC procedures.
- Participate in client meetings, presentations, reports, and project status updates.
- Support proposal development and technical presentations as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of professional substation engineering experience. Internship experience does not count toward the required three years.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program; OR
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related engineering technology discipline from an ABET-accredited program with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Previous engineering consulting experience preferred.
- Experience with high-voltage substation design and engineering.
- Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and applicable utility standards.
- Strong analytical, technical problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
- Ability to apply engineering principles to complex assignments and develop solutions to technical challenges.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
