Description

This is a skilled, full-time non-exempt position under the direct supervision of Development Director and Chief Building Official. This employee performs tasks associated with technical electrical inspection and preliminary plan exam work. The incumbent in this position inspects residential and commercial buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling; enforces compliance with current City of Spring Hill codes, ordinances, and regulations; recommends modification and adjustments as necessary; provides timely and thorough reports of each inspection.

Examples of Duties

Inspections & Code Compliance

  • Performs municipal code, zoning, building, and electrical inspections for residential and commercial properties.
  • Inspects existing structures for changes in use, occupancy, and compliance with current City of Spring Hill codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects electrical systems, including services, temporary services, rough-in installations, final installations, and other building system elements.
  • Approves inspected areas for certificates of occupancy.
  • Orders correction of violations and conducts re-inspections to verify compliance.

Permits & Applications

  • Reviews and approves or denies sign permit applications involving electrical installations and ensures continued compliance.
  • Receives calls and answers questions regarding permits, inspections, and code requirements.
  • Explains and interprets City codes, ordinances, requirements, and restrictions.

Public & Professional Relations

  • Confers with architects, contractors, builders, property owners, and the public regarding inspections and code compliance.
  • Consults with and advises property owners on code requirements and compliance.

Records, Reports & Correspondence

  • Maintains files and records of inspection activities, findings, communications, and active projects.
  • Prepares official correspondence related to code violations and other issues.
  • Writes reports and other documents related to inspections and violations.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Performs work safely and follows all applicable OSHA, Federal, State, and City regulations.
  • Reports accidents immediately to the supervisor.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 5+ years of increasingly responsible electrical construction or inspection experience preferred.
  • Valid Tennessee Drivers License.
  • IAEI, NFPA or ICC Electrical Inspector Certification, as well as the State of Tennessee Electrical Inspector Certification (residential and commercial) preferred, or ability to obtain within 1 year. Preference will be given to individuals with electrical plan review experience, or certification.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices relating to municipal code and zoning enforcement.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn and understand relevant codes, rules, laws and procedures, whether local, state or federal.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid drivers license.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Physical Requirements:

  • Uses various office equipment, including computers, telephones, fax machines, copy machines, and related equipment.
  • Occasionally sits while performing job duties.
  • Frequently walks and stands.
  • Frequently climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls.
  • Frequently hears and speaks.
  • Frequently uses hands and fingers to operate, handle, and feel objects, tools, and controls.
  • Frequently reaches with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally performs additional physical activities as required by the position

Working Conditions

Work is occasionally performed indoors in a comfortable, climate-controlled o?ce environment. More frequently, he or she will be outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including rain, cold, extreme heat, snow, ice, etc. Exposure to animals such as rodents, snakes, spiders, dogs etc. The noise level is often high while in the field.

Employees earn one day of sick leave each month, which is immediately accessible. You will also earn 2 weeks of vacation during your first year of employment, one of which you can access after a 6-month introductory period, the remaining vacation is accrued monthly.
