Electrical Reliability Engineer
(Power Plant Background)
The Electrical Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and resilience of critical electrical infrastructure within data center facilities. Leveraging experience from power plant environments, this role focuses on assessing equipment condition, optimizing maintenance strategies, and providing oversight of vendors supporting mission-critical electrical systems to maintain continuous uptime.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Reliability & Assessment
+ Perform comprehensive condition assessments of electrical systems including switchgear, UPS systems, transformers, generators, ATS/STS units, PDUs, battery systems, and distribution networks.
+ Apply reliability engineering principles such as Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
+ Evaluate system performance, redundancy, and fault tolerance consistent with data center uptime requirements.
+ Identify risks, failure points, and lifecycle concerns; develop corrective action and replacement strategies.
+ Produce detailed assessment reports, asset health scoring, and capital planning recommendations.
Vendor Oversight
Provide technical oversight and coordination of electrical contractors, OEM service providers, and testing vendors.
+ Review and approve maintenance procedures, switching plans, testing protocols, and reports.
+ Ensure vendors adhere to safety standards, site procedures, and contract requirements.
+ Track vendor performance against KPIs, SLAs, and quality standards.
+ Witness critical maintenance activities, testing (e.g., relay testing, load bank tests), and commissioning.
Maintenance & Reliability Program
Develop and improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical assets.
+ Utilize condition monitoring techniques such as infrared thermography, power quality analysis, and partial discharge monitoring.
+ Ensure proper maintenance of critical backup systems including generators, UPS, and battery banks.
+ Standardize procedures and drive continuous improvement across multiple facilities.
Compliance, Safety & Documentation
Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, standards, and best practices (e.g., NFPA 70/70E, IEEE, NETA).
+ Maintain accurate documentation including single-line diagrams, arc flash studies, maintenance records, and test results.
+ Support audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance reviews.
+ Promote and enforce a strong electrical safety culture.
Continuous Improvement
+ Analyze system performance data to identify trends and opportunities for reliability improvements.
+ Lead initiatives to reduce electrical failures, improve efficiency, and optimize operating costs.
+ Support design reviews and capital projects to enhance system resiliency and maintainability.
+ Collaborate with engineering and construction teams on upgrades and expansions.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
5–10+ years of experience in power plant operations, electrical maintenance, or reliability engineering.
Strong expertise in medium- and low-voltage electrical systems, protective relaying, and power distribution.
Experience conducting equipment condition assessments and failure analysis.
Proven ability to oversee contractors and vendors in an industrial or mission-critical environment.
Preferred
Experience in power plants or other high-availability/mission-critical facilities.
Familiarity with Tier standards (Uptime Institute) and data center power architectures.
Professional certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer), NETA certification, or CMRP.
Experience with SCADA, EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems), or BMS platforms.
Knowledge of commissioning and integrated systems testing.
Key Skills & Competencies
Advanced electrical troubleshooting and analytical skills
Vendor management and technical oversight
Strong understanding of power system reliability and redundancy
Clear communication and cross-functional collaboration
Ability to work under pressure in critical environments
Strong commitment to safety and compliance
Working Conditions
May require travel to multiple sites.
Participation in on-call rotation or after-hours support for critical events.
Work performed in energized environments requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
Success Metrics
Reduction in electrical system failures and unplanned outages
Improved asset reliability and mean time between failures (MTBF)
Successful completion of equipment assessments and implementation of recommendations
Accurate and up-to-date electrical documentation and reporting
