Maintenance Electrician / Heating & Refrigeration Technician

Under the direct supervision of Maintenance and Transportation Coordinator, to perform maintenance, repair, installation, and renovation work in school buildings and facilities, including electrical systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration equipment. Performs related duties and general maintenance work as assigned to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of district facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Plans layout, installs, maintains, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, controls, and electrical apparatus.
  • Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams and blueprints to ensure proper installation and operation of electrical systems.
  • Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, motor starters, disconnects, and circuit breaker panels.
  • Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.
  • Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical malfunctions in lighting, power distribution, motors, controls, and related systems.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, motors, thermostats, controls, and related components.
  • Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and control issues in HVAC and refrigeration systems and makes necessary repairs.
  • Monitors and adjusts HVAC control systems to ensure efficient operation and occupant comfort.
  • Observes functioning of equipment and systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, repair, or replacement.
  • Maintains records documenting electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration maintenance work, repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Studies building plans, blueprints, diagrams, and drawings to determine equipment, tools, and materials required.
  • Moves equipment, materials, supplies, furniture, and fixtures as needed to perform work.
  • Establishes written estimates of time and material costs needed to complete projects.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities and recommends repair or replacement actions to supervisor.
  • Orders materials, parts, refrigerants, and supplies as needed to ensure efficient operation of district electrical and HVAC systems.
  • Assists with emergency repairs and responds to facility maintenance issues as required.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Five years of experience in the trade area
  • Experience in major projects related to skill area
  • Appropriate area/skills certification
  • Valid driver's license

Equipment

Uses hand tools of the electrical and HVAC trades, related power equipment, testing instruments such as ohmmeters, voltage and amperage meters, refrigerant gauges, leak detection equipment, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, and other diagnostic equipment.

Safety Requirements

  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures, regulations, and codes governing electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration work.
  • Complies with OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, ladder safety requirements, and refrigerant handling requirements.
  • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment when performing assigned duties.

Travel Requirements

Frequent travel between schools, district facilities, and central offices may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of tools, materials, practices, maintenance methods, and procedures used in the electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration trades.
  • Knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, HVAC systems, refrigeration principles, and applicable safety standards.
  • Knowledge of HVAC controls, thermostats, motors, compressors, and refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to follow oral and written work orders from supervisor and coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance and repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, contractors, and others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Exposure to electrical currents, high voltage, moving mechanical parts, refrigerants, and HVAC equipment.
  • Occasional work in confined spaces, on rooftops, ladders, lifts, or elevated locations.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, and prolonged standing.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or other adverse conditions.
