Join our dedicated Public Works team as a skilled Electrician and help keep our city shining, safe, and running strong. If you enjoy hands-on outdoor work, take pride in craftsmanship, and care about serving your community, this is your chance to make a direct and meaningful impact.

In this role, you'll perform maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical wiring systems and equipment; street lighting; lighting in parks, playgrounds, and parking lots; lighting for public buildings and services; and the installation and maintenance of the City's traffic control system. This position offers stable, reliable work with local travel only-no long commutes or overnight stays.

We're looking for a dependable, safety-focused Certified Journeyman or Master Electrician who's ready to jump into action when duty calls. Flexibility is required for nights, weekends, emergency call-ins, and participation in rotational watch duty.

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Make a tangible difference by keeping our community safe, well-lit, and operational.
  • Enjoy steady, meaningful work without leaving the City of West Allis.
  • Build your career with training, development, and advancement opportunities in a supportive, team-focused environment.
  • Receive an exceptional benefits package, including contributory medical and fully paid dental, a dual pension program, generous time off, and an up to $2,500 sign-on bonus for qualified candidates.

What You'll Do

  • Install, repair, and test electrical systems, including wiring, switches, panels, outlets, transformers, and lighting.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot motors, generators, timing devices, and battery systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance-inspect, clean, lubricate, and adjust components.
  • Locate underground cables using the Diggers Hotline Network.
  • Diagnose issues in both low- and high-voltage systems using voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers, and other tools.
  • Install and repair streetlight poles, underground cable runs, and beacon lights on City water towers.
  • Inspect and maintain switches, transformers, and control cabinets.
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings accurately.
  • Estimate job costs, sketch circuits, and order required materials.
  • Operate City vehicles safely and serve the public with professionalism.
  • Communicate clearly, maintain reliable attendance, and assist with related duties as needed.

What You'll Bring

  • Valid Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and accountability in every task.
  • Solid teamwork and communication skills with an emphasis on emotional intelligence.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical systems, tools, materials, and safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with electrical codes, hazard prevention, and regulatory standards.
  • Ability to interpret diagrams, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather, at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License; CDL Class B or C with endorsements required within 12 months of hire.
