Role: Embedded Software Engineer
Location: Chillicothe, IL
Duration: 12 months
 
Description:
This position provides hands-on experience in both Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) verification and validation for embedded control systems. The engineer will work with dSPACE, MATLAB/Simulink, automation frameworks, and production software.
Position's Contributions to Work Group:

• Provide additional testing support for the team

Typical task breakdown:

• 40% HIL/SIL test development and execution, 30% test automation and scripting, 20% issue investigation and debugging, 10% team collaboration, reviews, and planning.
• Develop, execute, and maintain validation tests for embedded control software using dSPACE, MATLAB/Simulink, and automation tools

Team Structure

• Part of the Software Verification & Validation team supporting virtual validation, SIL, and HIL testing for Caterpillar embedded control systems.
• Collaborates with cross-functional engineering teams across software, controls, and product groups

Work environment:

• Primarily onsite engineering environment in Mossville, utilizing HIL benches, virtual validation tools, and laboratory test equipment.
• Fast-paced, collaborative environment focused on delivering high-quality software and meeting product program commitments

 
Education & Experience Required:

• Years of experience: Minimum of 2-4 years experience
• Degree requirement: Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering or relevant field required.

Additional Technical Skills

• Experience with CAN/J1939 communication protocols and Vector tools (CANoe/CANalyzer) for embedded systems testing and diagnostics.
• Experience in ECU integration, system-level verification, debugging, and root-cause analysis.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle, version control, and test automation framework development.
• Ability to read electrical schematics, perform hardware setup, and troubleshoot HIL/SIL test environments.
• Familiarity with diagnostics, fault injection, and validation reporting tools

 
HM Call Notes:

• Matlab & Simulink extensive experience.
• Developing test automation framework and test script
• Troubleshooting test equipment software, Hardware, Firmware, Sensors and other electronics.
• Troubleshooting of CAN Bus and Ethernet.
• Helping in setting up HIL & SIL Test , more focus on HIL.
• Programming Languages Required: C/C++ and Python

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex software and hardware issues.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaboration across software, controls, and validation teams.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and meeting project deadlines.
