Location: Bergen County, New Jersey
Position Type: Full-Time
Compensation: Starting at $130,000 annually
Schedule: 12-hour shifts
Commute: Approximately 10 minutes from New York City

Position Overview

A well-established hospital system in Bergen County, New Jersey is seeking an experienced, Board-Certified Physician Assistant to join its busy Emergency Department.

This is an opportunity to work in a modern emergency care environment alongside experienced physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary clinical teams. The department treats a high annual patient volume and provides care across both the main Emergency Department and a dedicated Fast Track area.

The successful candidate should be comfortable managing a broad range of emergency presentations and working efficiently in a fast-paced clinical setting.

Practice Environment

The Emergency Department features:

  • Approximately 40 treatment rooms.
  • High annual patient volume.
  • Dedicated Fast Track services.
  • Advanced CT and ultrasound capabilities.
  • Modern airway and emergency equipment.
  • Integrated electronic medical record system.
  • Around-the-clock access to interventional cardiac services.
  • Neurology and neurosurgical support.
  • Pediatric hospitalist coverage.
  • Critical care/intensivist support.
  • Close collaboration with attending emergency physicians and multidisciplinary teams.

Clinical Responsibilities

Main Emergency Department

The PA will evaluate and treat patients presenting with a variety of moderate- to high-acuity medical and traumatic conditions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing focused and comprehensive patient assessments.
  • Developing differential diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic studies.
  • Managing acute medical and trauma-related presentations.
  • Working closely with supervising/attending physicians on complex cases.
  • Participating in emergency resuscitation and stabilization.
  • Providing appropriate consultations and coordinating patient care.
  • Documenting assessments, treatment, and disposition accurately.
  • Supporting safe transitions, admissions, and discharges.

Fast Track

The PA will independently manage a high volume of lower-acuity emergency and urgent-care presentations.

Common cases may include:

  • Minor orthopedic injuries.
  • Sprains and strains.
  • Simple lacerations.
  • Minor infections.
  • Rashes and uncomplicated dermatologic conditions.
  • Other routine urgent-care complaints.

Responsibilities include:

  • Efficient patient evaluation and diagnosis.
  • Treatment and minor procedures within scope of practice.
  • Appropriate ordering and review of diagnostic testing.
  • Patient education and discharge instructions.
  • Timely disposition and follow-up planning.
  • Collaboration with nursing and ancillary staff to maintain efficient patient flow.

Schedule

The department operates around the clock with 12-hour shifts, including:

  • 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
  • 11:00 AM–11:00 PM
  • 7:00 PM–7:00 AM

Typical scheduling expectations include:

  • Approximately 2 overnight shifts per 6-week scheduling block, with occasional additional overnight coverage.
  • Approximately 6 weekend shifts per 6-week block.
  • Approximately 2 on-call days per 6-week block.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Master's-level Physician Assistant education.
  • Minimum 1 year of Emergency Department experience.
  • Current and unrestricted New Jersey Physician Assistant license.
  • Current NCCPA certification.
  • Active DEA registration.
  • New Jersey Controlled Dangerous Substances registration.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
