Program Overview

The Empress EMS “Earn to Learn” Academy is a 12-week, state-approved EMT certification program. Participants complete an Emergency Medical Technology education program, pass cognitive and practical exams, and earn licensure to practice as an EMT in New York State.

Empress EMS is the largest provider of EMS in the Hudson Valley Region, providing both emergency and non-emergency patient transport. Upon passing the New York State Exam, EMTs join the frontlines of Empress EMS, providing emergency treatment to the sick and injured.

Empress EMS offers career paths for every EMT, with opportunities to grow into logistics, the Community Paramedic division, Quality Improvement, Special Operations, and the Emergency Communications Center. EMTs may also take advantage of the Empress EMS Paramedic Scholarship Program to advance toward becoming a paramedic.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License with a driving record that meets company requirements
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, including drug screening, background check, and physical agility test (CPAT)

Work Environment

Students primarily learn in a classroom and/or simulation lab setting, with occasional ride-alongs alongside a licensed EMT or Paramedic. Work occurs both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to hazardous conditions, blood/body fluids, fumes/odors, temperature changes, and extended days. Respirator use may be required. Involves shift work and duties frequently performed in mobile environments and confined areas.

 

Physical Requirements

Students are regularly required to use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Frequently required to stand and walk; and to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must frequently lift and/or carry up to 150 lbs. unassisted and up to 300 lbs. as part of a two-person crew. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
