Overview

The Wastewater Engineering division is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Engineer 1 to support the planning, design, and delivery of wastewater collection system improvement projects. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who is ready to apply sound engineering principles, collaborate across project phases, and help deliver reliable public infrastructure that supports the community.

Position Description

This position focuses on wastewater collection system improvement projects and provides engineering support from initial planning through design, construction, and project closeout. The Engineer 1 works under general supervision while exercising independent judgment on technical assignments, coordinating with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and the public to help ensure projects are completed effectively and in compliance with applicable standards.

What you will get to do:

  • Coordinate and perform engineering design work and prepare plans, specifications, and related documents for wastewater collection system projects.
  • Review and approve improvement and construction plans and provide technical engineering support within the assigned program area.
  • Facilitate project design and implementation activities, including coordination with engineering technicians, construction inspectors, consultants, and contractors.
  • Conduct field inspections and site visits to support design development, construction oversight, and issue resolution.
  • Provide project management support, including contract administration, preparation of specifications and contract documents, cost estimating, pre-construction coordination, and interpretation of project requirements.
  • Perform engineering studies, analyze data, develop recommendations, and prepare technical reports.
  • Represent the organization in meetings and presentations with the public, agencies, developers, advisory groups, and other stakeholders.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints related to engineering projects and recommend corrective actions as appropriate.

Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed in an office environment with regular opportunities for independent judgment and decision-making. The position also includes occasional fieldwork, site visits, and interaction with internal and external partners. The role is generally sedentary, with some walking, standing, bending, driving, and light lifting associated with project inspections and coordination activities.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and collective bargaining agreements affecting City policies and operations.
  • City government administration, organization, functions, and services.
  • Engineering principles, practices, and methods.
  • Practices, principles, procedures, regulations, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment as they relate to public works projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or a closely related field.
  • Up to one year of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering certificate is required.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Good driving record according to our driving matrix (see below).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to four years of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of Wastewater collection system engineering principles and the technology used to deliver completed projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.

DRIVING MATRIX:

You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:

  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one-year period.
  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
