Position Overview
Join Northrop Grumman's Vehicle Dynamics and Controls team and contribute to the design, development, implementation, verification, and testing of advanced Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) algorithms and simulation tools.
The selected engineer will work on GNC applications for spacecraft and other advanced aerospace vehicles, including guidance, navigation, attitude control, state estimation, dynamics, kinematics, and control-law development.
This position also provides on-console activation team support, which may occasionally require 12-hour shifts, overnight support, and weekend coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, implement, verify, and test GNC algorithms and software.
- Develop and maintain modelling and simulation tools for aerospace vehicle dynamics and controls.
- Design and implement attitude-control and state-estimation algorithms.
- Perform complex kinematics, dynamics, and control-system analyses.
- Support 3-DOF and 6-DOF GNC modelling, simulation, verification, and validation.
- Perform actuator and sensor sizing and selection.
- Develop guidance algorithms for position, orientation, trajectory, and orbital objectives.
- Develop and analyse control laws and associated hardware/software requirements.
- Perform statistical processing of navigation measurements and sensor data.
- Support spacecraft GNC development through various phases of flight and mission operations.
- Participate in integration, verification, and testing activities.
- Support on-console activation activities, including occasional overnight, weekend, and extended shifts.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and program leadership.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with 8+ years of industry experience; OR
- Master's degree in a related field with 6+ years of industry experience; OR
- PhD in a related field with 4+ years of industry experience.
- Experience using MATLAB/Simulink or C/C++ to design and implement attitude-control or state-estimation algorithms.
- Experience performing actuator/sensor sizing and selection.
- Experience with 3-DOF or 6-DOF GNC modelling, simulation, and verification/validation.
- Strong experience with kinematics, dynamics, and control-system analysis for spacecraft GNC.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with early-stage spacecraft conceptual design or clean-sheet spacecraft design.
- Experience with software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
- Experience with satellite integration and test (I&T).
- Experience supporting on-orbit spacecraft operations.
- Experience leading a small team of GNC engineers.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with subsystem engineers and program leadership.
- Active TS/SCI clearance.
