Job Description

ATTENTION ALASKA RESIDENTS!

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Bridge Section, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex (Bridge Engineering Assistant) in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1: $35.45 hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Assistant 2: $40.86 hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Assistant 3: $46.71 hourly (OT Eligible)

What you will be doing:

The Bridge Engineering Assistant plays a hands-on role in managing and enhancing our state's 1,085 bridges. Youll be involved in a variety of exciting tasks, from conducting bridge inspections and analyzing existing structures to designing new bridges and contributing to construction projects. Under the guidance of licensed engineers, youll perform structural analysis, calculations, and prepare detailed plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports. Youll also create structural details, calculate quantities, and draft specifications for construction contracts. Dive into a career where your skills will directly contribute to the safety and improvement of the State of Alaskas infrastructure.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

A position in the Bridge Section offers hands-on professional experience with a group of hard-working engineers who put safety first and are recognized nationally as experts in our field. The office has up to 30 staff members - small enough to be personal, but large enough to have a broad knowledge base in all subdisciplines of bridge structural, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineering

The benefits of joining our team:

Some advantages of starting your career in the Bridge Section are:

  • Preparation for the PE exam - frequent trainings and mentoring towards licensure
  • Combination of office and field assignments - all staff complete one or more summer inspection trips throughout the state lasting 1-2 weeks
  • Diversity of projects - staff are encouraged to gain experience with all bridge types and aspects of design, including repairs, retrofits, and new design
  • Opportunity to spend a summer on a bridge construction project somewhere in the state
  • Support to get a drone pilot's license, if desired, and use drones for bridge inspection
  • Work/life balance - 37.5-hour work week with paid overtime when needed
  • Opportunities to be involved with bridge research projects that DOT&PF funds
  • Attend and present at professional conferences.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is located at the DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau. The office work environment is "casual-professional", team-oriented, and friendly. Bridge inspection assignments can involve travel to all regions of Alaska. We can reach most of our bridges via major airlines and driving, but smaller aircraft, including float planes, are required to reach our remote bridge sites. Juneau is located in a temperate rainforest with steep mountains, glaciers, and deep fjords within its boundaries. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant, and Juneau is famous for its spectacular scenery (even on the rainy days). Hiking, trail running, skiing, and cycling are popular pastimes

Who we are looking for:

To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:

  • Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures, and other determinate or indeterminate systems.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Special Note:

  • Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) Certification is preferred but not essential.

  • Valid Drivers License, desirable but not required.

  • Physical ability to descend / ascend bridge embankments and river banks.

  • This position may also occasionally travel in small aircraft and boats, walking on steep slopes, performing inspections at heights, performing inspections in remote areas, and working in high traffic areas with temporary traffic control.
