Description

Sterling Engineering is partnering with a leading heavy industrial manufacturer to hire an Engineering Project Manager II in Gary, IN. This position will lead complex capital improvement projects within a large, active manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate has a strong engineering background and experience managing capital projects from initial scope and budgeting through construction, commissioning, and final handoff.

Salary: $100,000–$125,000 + annual bonus

Hire Type: Direct Hire

 Responsibilities
  • Lead capital engineering projects from concept and business case development through construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, risks, and change management activities.
  • Develop scopes of work, cost estimates, feasibility studies, and capital funding requests.
  • Manage projects typically up to $5M, with potential responsibility for projects valued up to $25M.
  • Review engineering drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and equipment designs.
  • Coordinate outside engineering firms, contractors, equipment suppliers, and internal project teams.
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, procurement, finance, and EHS throughout project execution.
  • Oversee equipment installation, construction activities, testing, startup, and commissioning.
  • Ensure projects meet safety, environmental, technical, schedule, and budget requirements.
  • Support the use of modern project management, automation, and AI-based tools to improve project planning and execution.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5–7+ years of project management experience within heavy industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Proven experience managing capital projects from scope development through commissioning.
  • Experience managing multimillion-dollar capital projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications.
  • Strong project scheduling, budgeting, contractor management, and stakeholder coordination skills.
  • Experience working within an active manufacturing or industrial facility.
  • Steel, metals, mining, petrochemical, or similar heavy industrial experience is highly preferred.
  • PMP, OSHA 10/30, Primavera P6, EPCM, Lean, or Six Sigma experience is a plus.
