    Job Duties

    Protects the public health by ensuring that public drinking water is in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Waterworks Regulations. Supervises or leads engineering functions for assigned regional area or office. Services as a subject matter expert providing technical and procedural guidance and expertise to other staff. Characteristics include establishing priorities and assigning work, auditing and approving other engineers' work, participates in engineering design evaluation for new waterworks or waterworks considering modification, monitoring new and improved facilities, conducting non-routine and final inspections, as well as interpreting regulations for owners, operators, local government, engineering consultants, and other staff. Performs routine sanitary surveys at and provides technical assistance to surface water treatment plants and systems. Evaluates and recommends revisions to local, state, or national regulations, facilitates implementation of regulations, supervises preparation of reports and provides training and technical assistance to other staff and the public. Most activities are handled independently with supervision required only for very large projects or the most complex issues.

    Minimum Qualifications

    •Knowledge of sanitary engineering pertaining to drinking water
    •Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing drinking water
    •Knowledge of management practices and principles and administrative and supervisory principles
    •Ability to make sound engineering decisions
    •Ability to monitor and assess progress and interpret and apply federal and state laws and regulations
    •Ability to create technical reports
    •Strong oral and written communication skills
    •Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, officials, engineers and other public health groups

    Additional Considerations

    • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) in Virginia preferred.
