Position Overview
The EHS & Compliance Manager leads the development, oversight, and continuous improvement of environmental, health, safety, quality, and operational compliance initiatives across our US manufacturing operations. Reporting locally to Senior Management and collaborating closely with the Global Sustainability Officer, this role balances regulatory adherence (OSHA, EPA, state mandates) with corporate sustainability standards, SEDEX ethical compliance, cross-departmental safety execution, rigorous document control management, and the active maintenance and expansion of ISO management system certifications.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental & Sustainability Strategy
- Maintain and retain current ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) certification, ensuring full compliance, site readiness, and continuous internal audit performance.
- Partner directly with the Global Sustainability Officer to align plant-level initiatives with corporate sustainability goals, ESG frameworks, and global reporting standards.
- Develop a phased implementation roadmap to achieve ISO 50001 (Energy Management System) certification.
- Propose and execute cost-effective, feasible site initiatives addressing energy conservation, pollution reduction, waste management, recycling, and sustainable facility design.
- Evaluate local sustainability proposals against operational budgets and ease of integration into current manufacturing practices.
- Prepare documentation and proposals for project funding, including state and federal environmental grant applications.
- Manage client and supplier sustainability information requests, coordinating with the Global Sustainability Officer to maintain centralized metrics accessible across the organization.
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Build and execute a strategic roadmap to attain ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System) certification.
- Maintain up-to-date expertise on all local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations (OSHA, EPA, state EHS standards).
- Collaborate with business operations to design and enforce safety programs, including Safe Job Procedures, Standard Operating Practices (SOPs), PPE requirements, and mandatory employee training.
- Conduct regular site safety audits, enforce regulatory standards, and manage the employee incident/hazard reporting system to ensure prompt, thorough resolution.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and issue Corrective Actions (CAPA) following internal audits or safety incidents.
Document Control, Governance & ISO Systems
- Establish, maintain, and oversee a centralized EHS & Quality Document Control system, ensuring all operational procedures, policies, safety forms, training records, and ISO documentation follow strict version control, approval workflows, and audit-ready retention schedules.
- Maintain SEDEX (SMETA) audit certification and social compliance readiness, ensuring alignment across labor standards, health and safety, environmental management, and business ethics.
- Develop an actionable roadmap to attain ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) certification in the near future, aligning document control and EHS workflows with core operational quality standards.
- Facilitate the Internal Supplier Audit Program to ensure supply chain transparency, ethical sourcing, and compliance with internal company policies.
- Work directly with product design and R&D teams to embed safe, compliant, and sustainable processes into new product innovations and workflow enhancements.
- Track and report meaningful leading indicators on EHS risk, ISO system readiness, document control compliance, and SEDEX performance to local Senior Leadership and the Global Sustainability Officer.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on EHS, quality, and compliance management within a mid-sized US manufacturing facility.
- ISO & Document Control: Proven experience managing ISO 14001 standards, SEDEX (SMETA) audits, and establishing robust document control processes (SOP management, version tracking, and record control); experience developing roadmaps for ISO 45001, ISO 50001, and ISO 9001 frameworks.
- Global Alignment: Proven ability to collaborate with corporate executive leadership and a Global Sustainability Officer to translate global strategy into site-level execution.
- Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state-level regulatory frameworks.
- Certifications (Preferred): Certified ISO/SEDEX Lead Auditor, Document Control Certification, CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHMM, or OSHA 30-hour certification.
