General Description

The employee in this technical support title assists with the implementation of the City's sustainability and environmental compliance programs.

Employees of this class work independently under general supervision of an environmental specialist or other senior-level employee. This employee may oversee consultants working on sustainability or environmental compliance environmental projects. This employee may supervise temporary or intern positions. Related work is performed as required.

This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Typical Work Activities

  • Assist with planning and implementing sustainability initiatives intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts;
  • Investigate grant opportunities and prepare grant applications to further community-wide climate mitigation and adaptation projects;
  • Apply for and track incentives and rebates for municipal energy and sustainability upgrades;
  • Assist with administration of grant funded projects and prepare grant reports;
  • Monitor progress of project activities and ensure work is performed according to work scope and timeline;
  • Develop and track project budgets and track grant reimbursements;
  • Assist with the preparation of requests for proposals for consultant professional services needed to complete specific project tasks;
  • Assist with the preparation and presentation of project reports to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Develop educational materials for the Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ), including but not limited to posting content on the City's webpages and social media and creating educational flyers, handouts and presentation materials;
  • Collaborate with stakeholder groups to develop and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation plans and policies;
  • Promote DEQ initiatives by developing outreach strategies and efforts including but not limited to mailings, emails, website development, social media posts, press events, informational hand-outs and presentations at informational events and meetings;
  • Assist with storm water pollution prevention, and hazardous materials compliance activities, including reporting and recordkeeping.

Minimum Qualifications

I. Bachelors degree in Sustainable/Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Urban Planning, Public Administration or a closely related field PLUS two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in climate change, sustainability, environmental management, environmental planning or environmental engineering;

OR

II. Associates degree in Sustainable/Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Urban Planning, Public Administration or a closely related field, PLUS three (3) years of experience as described in I.
