Environmental Systems Technician - Solid Waste

This is more than a maintenance position-its an opportunity to serve on a hazardous materials emergency response team, protect vital natural resources, and help operate one of the countys most critical public services.

What Youll Do:

  • Responding as a member of the Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team during chemical spills, fires, and other emergency incidents.
  • Monitoring and maintaining landfill gas, leachate collection, groundwater, surface water, and air quality systems.
  • Collecting environmental samples and interpreting monitoring data to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Operating and maintaining the Household Hazardous Waste Facility and educating the public on proper hazardous waste disposal.
  • Performing environmental testing, troubleshooting system issues, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Assisting with construction, maintenance, and repair of landfill gas, wastewater, and leachate collection systems.
  • Working with contractors, engineers, and regulatory agencies to maintain compliance with environmental permits.
  • Supporting spill prevention, hazardous waste management, and environmental protection programs.
  • Operating heavy equipment, specialized monitoring instruments, and technical field equipment.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation to respond to after-hours environmental or operational emergencies.

What We're Looking For:

  • Associates degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and meet insurability requirements.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to accomplish various tasks in a team-oriented setting.
