Description Equipment Mechanics have the essential task of servicing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of city equipment, such as tractors, police cars, trash trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, and much more. Current Vacancies 2nd shift (3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.)

Characteristic Work

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other equipment issues.
  • Repair and maintain gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drive trains, brake systems, steering systems, electrical and electronic systems, and other major components of various automotive, construction, and related equipment.
  • Utilize a variety of equipment, drill presses, chain hoists, motor stands, battery chargers, hand tools, wheel balancers, and more for making repairs.
  • Respond to road service calls to repair equipment in the field.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems on equipment.
  • Fabricate as needed using drill presses, torches, grinders, and related equipment.
  • Maintain and repair shop tools and equipment.
  • Perform electronic recordkeeping, including posting parts, labor, and diagnostic information.
  • Read repair manuals and review repair videos to determine the appropriate method of repair.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. A minimum of three years of skilled, paid experience in automotive and/or construction equipment repair, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVAENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio drivers license. Must obtain a valid State of Ohio commercial drivers license class A with a tanker endorsement within 120 days of employment. CDL training is provided outside of an employees scheduled shift.

Competitive Examination Process This is a classified position. The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

RESIDENCY Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVERS LICENSE An applicant having a valid drivers license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Drivers License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
