The County of San Mateos Parks Department is seeking qualified candidates for the Equipment Mechanic / Operator. Under general supervision, performs journey-level mechanical maintenance, diagnostics, repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of gasoline-powered, diesel-powered, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrically powered park maintenance equipment. Operates heavy maintenance and construction equipment, including garbage truck operations in support of parks and facilities maintenance. Inspects, services, repairs, and maintains equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation; maintains maintenance records and inventory; provides technical guidance to maintenance staff; and performs related work as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey-level skilled mechanic classification responsible for performing complex maintenance and repair of park maintenance equipment and machinery. Incumbents independently diagnose equipment malfunctions, perform preventive maintenance, and complete major mechanical repairs. The class is distinguished from general Park Maintenance classifications by its specialized responsibility for equipment maintenance, repair, diagnostics, and technical support.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Two years of experience in the automotive or small equipment repair.

The examination will consist of a performance examination and interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the performance examination process. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
