Job Summary

Under direction of the Streets Supervisor, operates medium to heavy equipment in support of street construction, repair, and maintenance. This position performs skilled work in grading, paving, drainage work, and infrastructure maintenance.

Typical Duties

Equipment Operation

• Operates equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, and similar machinery used in street operations
• Performs grading, leveling, and material placement for street construction and maintenance
• Assists with paving, patching, and resurfacing activities

Street Construction & Maintenance

• Performs repair and maintenance of streets, alleys, and roadways
• Assists with drainage improvements, ditch maintenance, and culvert work
• Maintains road surfaces and ensures proper grading and drainage

Equipment Inspection & Maintenance

• Conducts pre-operation and post-operation inspections
• Reports equipment issues and coordinates with Fleet for maintenance
• Maintains equipment cleanliness and operational readiness

Safety & Compliance

• Follows safety procedures related to equipment operation and construction work
• Uses personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Assists in maintaining safe work zones and traffic control

Coordination & Support

• Works with crew members to coordinate daily operations
• Communicates with supervisor regarding site conditions and needs

Other Duties

• Performs other duties as assigned in support of street operations

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience operating heavy equipment required

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid New Mexico driver's license
• CDL required or ability to obtain

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

• Knowledge of equipment operation used in street construction and maintenance
• Knowledge of grading, paving, and drainage practices

Skills

• Skill in operating heavy equipment
• Skill in grading and material handling

Abilities

• Ability to perform skilled equipment operation
• Ability to maintain street infrastructure
• Ability to work safely in construction environments

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work involves heavy physical activity including lifting, bending, standing, and operating equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to weather, traffic, construction environments, heavy equipment, and hazardous conditions. The position may require overtime, emergency response, and on-call availability. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position. This position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City policies.
