    Job Description

    Pulmonology Nurse Practitioner

Patients with chronic lung disease need a clinician who can see the whole picture—symptoms, function, medications, and the life those lungs have to support. In this role you will own pulmonary follow-up, sharpen treatment plans, and keep people out of crisis. Success is measured in clearer breathing, safer transitions, and a clinic that runs on time without cutting corners.

    Performance Objectives

    • Manage a defined panel of patients with COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-related breathing disorders, adjusting therapy to guideline targets and documented goals.
    • Complete new and return visits that produce a clear diagnosis, a written plan, and patient understanding before they leave the exam room.
    • Cut avoidable exacerbations and 30-day returns by tightening inhaler technique, oxygen use, action plans, and timely follow-up after hospital or ED care.
    • Order and interpret pulmonary function tests, imaging, and labs in context, and escalate complex or unstable cases to the collaborating pulmonologist the same day.
    • Close care gaps with respiratory therapy, sleep medicine, primary care, and palliative partners so referrals, authorizations, and home services actually happen.
    • Document and code visits so the record supports medical necessity, quality measures, and clean billing without rework.
    • Hold a reliable schedule: same-week access for urgent pulmonary needs and a no-show and results-follow-up process you own.

    Environment & Resources

You will practice in a physician-collaborative pulmonary setting with a dedicated medical assistant, respiratory therapy support, and an established EHR and referral network. The collaborating pulmonologist is available for complex decisions; you are not expected to invent protocols alone. Scheduling, prior authorization, and care coordination are shared so clinical time stays clinical.

    Essential Qualifications

    • Active nurse practitioner license and national certification (AGNP, FNP, or ACNP) with prescriptive authority in the practice state.
    • At least two years of pulmonary, critical care, hospital medicine, or complex chronic-disease practice, with comfort managing inhalers, oxygen, steroids, and biologics.
    • Demonstrated skill reading spirometry and acting on results, not just ordering the test.
    • DEA registration and current BLS; ACLS preferred if the site includes higher-acuity coverage.
    • Clear, efficient documentation and the ability to explain a plan in plain language to patients and families.

    Why This Role

    • Real ownership of pulmonary outcomes, not a float pool of unrelated visits.
    • Physician partnership without surrendering independent clinical judgment.
    • A focused disease set where expertise compounds quickly.
    • Support staff and a defined panel so access and quality can both improve.

If you want your days judged by how well patients breathe and how cleanly the practice runs, apply with a brief note on a pulmonary outcome you improved and how you measured it.
