Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Department Administrator and full-time faculty mentor, the successful candidate will prepare and teach Ethnic Studies courses aligned with the candidates qualification as assigned by the department. Courses:

• ETHS 2400 - Introduction to Ethnic Studies
• ETHS 2410 - African American/Black Experiences
• ETHS 2420 - Asian American Experiences
• ETHS 2430 - Chicanx/Latinx Experiences
• ETHS 2440 - Native American Experiences

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

Pooled positions re-open every year. We encourage all interested to apply to re-posted adjunct positions.

This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Prepares and teaches Ethnic Studies course material as stipulated in the course curriculum outline or syllabi provided by the department.

2. Uses Canvas and Simple Syllabus as required by SLCC and department.

3. Supports professional commitment to the Department, School and College mission and values.

4. Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.

5. Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

6. Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments (usually within 48 hours of due date). Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.

7. Demonstrates a depth of understanding in the field of Ethnic Studies.

8. Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.

9. Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.

10. Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.

11. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.

12. Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.

13. Maintains professional and collegial behavior. Including responding to student and SLCC communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days).

14. Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints respectfully and promptly.

15. Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.

16. Completes all required employee trainings.

17. Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines.

18. Provides ADA accommodations as assigned by SLCCs Accessibility and Disability Services.

19. Other job-related duties as needed.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Ability to communicate subject matter to students.

2. Ability to use a computer and other instructional technologies.

3. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

4. Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.

You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment.

Your employment may be terminated At Will at any time.

You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Minimum qualifications

• Master's degree or above in Ethnic Studies from an accredited institution or in a closely related field to one of the areas listed above (course names/titles).
• Completed and passed a minimum of 9 credits of graduate level Social Science course work, including at least 3 credits of research.
