Evening Custodian

Start Date: When Filled

Hours/Days: 260 days per year, Monday - Friday, 3:30pm - 12:00am

Salary DOE: Range $24.13 - $27.51

Location: Kalama School District, Kalama, Washington

Benefits: Position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and LTD through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB) and retirement through the WA State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS).

Reports to Lead Custodians and Director of Operations

Custodian Essential Functions

  • Provide routine and specialized cleaning of classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, libraries, and other school facilities to maintain a sanitary, safe, and orderly environment.
  • Clean and maintain building entrances, walkways, and grounds, including litter removal, sweeping, and seasonal upkeep.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, buffers, vacuums, and pressure washers in accordance with manufacturer and district safety guidelines
  • Work within a team and individually to accomplish tasks while adhering to district guidelines
  • Respond promptly to immediate safety or operational concerns (e.g., spills, facility damage, alarms) to mitigate hazards and maintain a safe educational environment.
  • Assist with inventorying custodial supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained.
  • Arrange and reset furniture, equipment, and room layouts for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
  • Ensure proper use, labeling, storage, and inventory of cleaning chemicals and supplies in compliance with district safety protocols, OSHA, and WISHA regulations.
  • Perform minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs, tightening hardware, adjusting furniture, and clearing minor drain blockages.
  • Monitor building conditions daily, documenting and reporting maintenance needs, safety hazards, and supply shortages to Custodial Leads and/or the Director of Operations.
  • Assist maintenance staff with seasonal tasks such as snow removal, de-icing, and grounds cleanup.
  • Secure buildings and grounds by locking doors, closing windows, setting alarms, and monitoring for unauthorized access.
  • Work collaboratively with district employees, service companies, and contractors to maintain and improve the work environment.

Additional Duties

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned by the Director of Operations and Custodial Leads, for the purpose of ensuring a clean, safe work environment.

Equipment

  • Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment including brooms, mops, floor cleaners, waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, and powered/unpowered hand tools.
  • Use of computers and standard office equipment.

Safety Requirements

  • Follow all district safety procedures, including proper handling of hazardous materials following MSDS guidelines, adherence to bloodborne pathogen protocols, and compliance with PPE requirement
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Strict adherence to the use of safety gear while performing tasks including gloves, eye protection, masks, etc..

Travel Requirements

  • Travel between buildings on campus may be required

Work Schedules

  • Must work a standard schedule and overtime as needed.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Ability to work in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks for the entire scheduled shift including walking, bending, lifting equipment, and climbing stairs.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.

Qualifications Profile

  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School or Vocational School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Previous successful experience in custodial services, building management/maintenance capacity, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Washington Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
