Albacore Inc. is a Philadelphia-based company building highly-capable, mass-producible drone submarines to defend sovereign waters of America and allied nations. We are backed with more than $10 million from Y Combinator and venture capital investors.

The Role

We're looking for a highly motivated CPA who is eager to take ownership and grow alongside the business. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and wants exposure beyond traditional accounting.

You will serve as a key member of our finance function, supporting everything from tax compliance and IRS correspondence to accounts payable, accounts receivable, vendor management, financial reporting, and process development. The right person is detail-oriented, learns quickly, thrives in ambiguity, and is comfortable building processes from scratch.

What You'll Do

Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations
  • Own accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records and supporting documentation
  • Support cash management and forecasting activities

Tax & Compliance

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for IRS inquiries, notices, and correspondence
  • Support federal, state, and local tax filings
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and auditors
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
  • Assist with annual audits and financial reviews

Vendor & Systems Management

  • Manage relationships with accounting, payroll, banking, and finance vendors
  • Administer and improve financial systems and workflows
  • Evaluate and implement tools that improve operational efficiency
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting and financial planning initiatives

Process Improvement

  • Build scalable accounting processes and internal controls
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual workflows
  • Create documentation and standard operating procedures as the company grows
  • Support special projects across finance, operations, and HR

Required Qualifications

  • Active CPA license
  • 2-6 years of accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting fundamentals
  • Experience working directly with IRS notices, tax agencies, or regulatory compliance matters
  • Experience managing AP and AR processes
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems with limited oversight

Preferred Qualifications

  • Startup, defense, aerospace, manufacturing, or technology company experience
  • Experience supporting audits and tax filings
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, NetSuite, Ramp, Bill.com, Gusto, Rippling, or similar platforms
  • Experience building accounting processes in a high-growth environment

Base salary is expected to be between $65,000-$85,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and overall fit. For exceptional candidates with particularly relevant experience, we are open to considering compensation above this range.
