Reporting to the Global CTO, the Executive Lead for Global SMB Engineering owns the technology strategy and engineering delivery for the SMB business worldwide. The role leads a global engineering organization of around 4,000 people and is accountable for the platforms that serve millions of merchant locations, including the Genius POS platform, cloud POS, eCommerce and the software small businesses use to run their operations.

The role is accountable for modernizing those platforms as well as running them. That means moving the estate towards API first, cloud native and event driven architecture, raising developer productivity and standardizing how software is built, tested and operated across every team in the SMB organization.

The role works in close partnership with the President of SMB and with product, platform and operations leadership. It owns the engineering roadmap against SMB growth, margin, reliability and security objectives and is accountable for build or buy decisions and the performance of strategic technology partners. Within the first year the role holder will set the engineering vision for SMB, assess and shape the leadership team and land a clear modernization plan with commitments on scope, quality and timelines.

What you will be doing:

• Set the SMB engineering vision and strategy and align technology outcomes to growth, margin, reliability and security objectives.
• Lead the global SMB engineering organization of around 4,000 people across product engineering, platforms and operations.
• Modernize architecture and platforms towards API first, cloud native and event driven design.
• Improve developer productivity and standardize SDLC, testing and SRE practices across the organization.
• Own execution of major programmes covering modernization, resiliency, performance and cost and meet commitments on scope, quality and timelines.
• Deliver secure and compliant solutions that maintain PCI DSS and data privacy standards and partner with risk and security on threat modelling and fraud mitigation.
• Drive build or buy decisions and own the governance and performance of strategic technology vendors.
• Collaborate with Product, Operations, Customer Support, Finance and Sales to deliver seamlessly and achieve commercial outcomes.
• Track SMB commerce trends such as unified commerce, embedded payments and AI enabled risk and operations to inform the roadmap.
• Attract, develop and retain high performers and build a strong bench of engineering leaders.
• Represent SMB engineering to the CTO, the President of SMB and the Senior Leadership Team.

What you bring:

• Senior technology and engineering leadership experience at global scale on merchant or SMB oriented platforms.
• A track record of setting the technology vision, strategic plan and roadmap for a large organization.
• Product engineering experience with deep familiarity across payment processing, POS, omnichannel commerce and tokenization and security.
• Proven delivery across complex integrations and APIs with strong results on resiliency, security and performance.
• Ownership of enterprise and platform architecture including large scale cloud modernization.
• Sound judgement on build or buy decisions across development, corporate applications and cloud capabilities.
• Experience leading legacy systems transformation while investing in a platform aligned with business strategy.
• A strategic mindset with the ability to translate business goals into technology priorities and manage trade offs.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at every level of the organization.
• Experience as a change agent who has shaped engineering culture at scale.
• A track record of building high performing teams by developing internal talent and recruiting best in class leaders.
