PURPOSE: Ensure properly planned production, operation, machine settings, machine set up, organization of materials and documentation; according to quality and hygiene requirements, safety regulations, and customer specifications. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Machine Operation - Set up machine and change machine settings for new work orders/lot changes; based upon the parameter checklist
- Prepare customer orders for manufacturing, and understand the requirements of each. This includes checking the current order and the order sequence to ensure timely production of customer orders
- Start up the production line
- Monitor the activities of the Machine Operator Assistant; including but not limited to: the operation of the winder unit, labeling, and inspecting for quality; the packaging of finished goods with the stretch wrapping machine, while inspecting packaging for quality; and the compilation of samples from individual rolls, and the labelling of samples
- Serve as a backup for the Machine Operator Assistant
- Monitor production process to maintain optimal performance and quality
- Handover information regarding the current shift, to the oncoming shift. This should include information about the previous shift, current production order, lot changes planned for the next shift, malfunctions and measures taken to troubleshoot and repair
- Document data pertaining to quality and production requirements; to facilitate an efficient process
- Perform all duties according to safety, hygiene, and quality standards; outlined by company policy and customer specifications
- Maintain a clean and tidy workplace
Maintenance - Regularly perform maintenance activities and cleaning activities on production equipment; including the floor, control panel, and finger guard at calendar unit
- Maintain the following production equipment: Check photoelectric sensor for defects and pollution; check air tubes; check the drive belts for wear, tear, etc; check conveyor belts and deflecting rollers; check the bearings for heating, abrasion, and noise generation; take note of problematic areas and determine the solution
- Remove parts of fiber web that are stuck in the carding unit
- Identify, substantiate, record, and report any malfunction
- Once a malfunction has been repaired, test to ensure that machine function has been fully restored
- Maintenance of knives and winding rods
- Change calendar and machine settings, when using a different calendar
- Identify, substantiate, remedy, and report all malfunctions
- Retract material and/or fibers if there is a disruption
- Maintain clean and tidy workplace to prepare for the production of upcoming orders
- Maintain safe production work area during maintenance activities
Quality - Manual inspections of finished roll goods (dimensions, winding, etc.)
- Make daily inspection rounds throughout the production process
- Compare finished goods to a reference sample to maintain quality and customer specifications
- Take samples to the quality lab and carry out initial material testing at the production line; according to quality specifications
- Set metal detectors and other inspection systems and the production line
- Manual inspection of labeling to ensure that the correct data is on each label and the correct label is used
- Perform test runs of new material
- Manual inspection of packaging material on finished roll goods
- Monitor and evaluate initial production runs of new materials
- Working with test equipment (ie equipment for testing tensile strength)
- Entering information on all tasks into MES/ERP systems
- Ensure that any out of specification findings are properly documented and given to the QA Specialist
- Ensure that the required number of samples are received each shift for testing
- Communicate with Quality Assurance Specialist regarding all testing processes, issues, and results
- Ensure that the QMS conforms to ISO 9001:2015
- Ensure processes are delivering intended outcomes
- Report to Top Management on the performance of the QMS; on opportunities for improvement; on change requirements; on innovations
- Ensure the promotion of customer focus
- Ensure the integrity of the QMS is maintained
