About the Role
This position is responsible for laying out, cutting, forming, fitting, assembling, and repairing heavy-gauge metal components and structural fabrications. The role ensures that all work meets specified drawings, quality standards, and production schedules, contributing to the overall success and efficiency of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and written work instructions.
- Lay out work using precision measuring tools such as tape measures, squares, and calipers.
- Cut, bend, roll, drill, punch, bevel, grind, and form heavy-gauge materials.
- Fit and assemble components using jigs, clamps, and approved joining methods.
- Operate fabrication equipment like saws, shears, press brakes, and grinders.
- Perform welding tasks and inspect welds for visible defects.
- Verify dimensions, tolerances, alignment, and finish throughout fabrication.
- Use material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
- Identify materials, maintain traceability, and minimize scrap and rework.
- Complete production, inspection, and material-use records accurately.
- Maintain tools and work areas in clean, safe conditions.
- Communicate production issues, drawing discrepancies, and safety concerns promptly.
- Support continuous improvement, housekeeping, and preventive-maintenance activities.
- Follow all safety rules, quality procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of five years of experience in heavy fabrication, structural steel, or welding.
- Ability to interpret fabrication drawings, dimensions, and weld symbols.
- Proficiency with common fabrication tools and measuring instruments.
- Working knowledge of shop mathematics, including fractions and basic geometry.
- Ability to produce accurate work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable attendance and willingness to work scheduled shifts and overtime as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certificate or apprenticeship in welding or metal fabrication.
- Current welding certifications applicable to the employer's processes.
- Experience with CNC fabrication equipment or complex assemblies.
- Training in forklift operation, overhead crane use, and lockout/tagout.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing.
- Ability to move materials and tools within established company lifting limits.
Work Environment
- Work may involve heat, noise, sparks, fumes, vibration, and sharp edges.
- Required personal protective equipment includes safety glasses and gloves.
