Job Description

Position: Facilities Maintenance Specialist

Location: Middleton, Wisconsin

Department: Facilities

This is a fully onsite role based at our GMP Lab in Middleton, Wisconsin. We welcome applicants from all locations within the US. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this position, and any relocation costs will be the responsibility of the candidate.  Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, which includes a drug screening.

Position Summary:

As a Facilities Maintenance Specialist, you will support the Facilities function for the Middleton Site to provide repair, maintenance, and oversight in a fast-paced technical GMP lab environment. You will work closely with the internal project management team and consultants to provide maintenance insights into facility renovations.

The ideal candidate for this role will have experience maintaining and repairing building infrastructure and equipment that is robust and technical in nature, providing the best service to our internal customers, and delivering service record documentation which meets regulatory quality requirements.

Role Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities will be to provide facility maintenance services to a campus of several buildings in a biotechnology environment.

Tasks include:

  • Oversee mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and specialty systems throughout the facility and grounds, including service calls and in-house repairs.

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment inspections, daily rounds, and repairs to ensure optimal facility operations.

  • Respond to emergency and after-hours calls as part of an on-call rotation and ensure timely resolution through completion.

  • Manage and coordinate vendor-led scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, work requests, and special projects.

  • Ensure all work is completed in compliance with Quality Management Systems (QMS), OSHA, EHS, and applicable regulatory standards.

  • Identify, report, and correct safety hazards and operational deficiencies. Perform facility corrective and preventive maintenance where qualified, and repair where assigned.

  • Maintain a professional, safe, and clean work environment, including mechanical spaces, electrical rooms, and central utility areas.

  • Partner with Procurement to create task lists for maintenance contracts, ensure adherence to contracts and KPIs

  • Partner with Purchasing to issue purchase requests and review and approve invoices for payment to vendors

  • Maintain detailed knowledge of facility systems and equipment, and performs in a training capacity for new employee

  • Troubleshooting of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical failures

  • Provide daily operational support and perform additional duties as assigned.

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification and previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 2+ years).

  • Or associate's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification and previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 4+ years).

In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Advanced skills in maintenance and construction trades and techniques

  • Advanced knowledge of building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and security systems

  • Strong understanding of architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, building management automation systems, quality management systems, and engineering concepts

  • Adept at handling multiple projects and managing competing priorities

  • Ability to operate hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders and sanders

  • Ability to interact with other internal and external stakeholders and contractors to complete work orders to trade standards and customer expectations

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and facility management software including computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and work order tracking

  • Problem-solving abilities and technical troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to read and interpret building plans, technical drawings, and specifications

  • Available for on-call emergency response duties and occasional weekend work

  • Knowledge of GMP, safety regulations, and compliance requirements preferred

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn and adapt to new tactics and strategies

  • Comfort with ambiguity and effectiveness during periods of uncertainty and change
