Facility Technician - Painting & General Maintenance

POSITION SUMMARY:

The YMCA of Greenwich is seeking a skilled, dependable Facility Technician with strong professional painting and finishing experience. The ideal candidate is an experienced painter who can also serve as an all-around handyman. This person should be comfortable assessing problems, using practical judgment, working independently, and completing repairs correctly without needing constant direction. This position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and operation of a large, active facility. The successful candidate will take pride in their workmanship, pay close attention to detail, and understand that repairs and finishes must meet the standards of a highly visible, member-focused environment. A current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification is a significant advantage.

Facility Director

PAY RANGE:

$21/hour – $24/hour (based on experience)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Painting, Drywall, and Finish Work

• Perform interior and exterior painting projects throughout the facility.
• Prepare surfaces properly by cleaning, sanding, scraping, patching, caulking, and priming.
• Repair drywall, plaster, walls, ceilings, doors, trim, and other building finishes.
• Perform staining, sealing, touch-up work, and other finishing projects.
• Match existing paint colors and finishes as closely as possible.
• Protect floors, furniture, equipment, and occupied areas during painting projects.
• Produce clean, detailed, professional-quality results with minimal disruption to YMCA operations.
• Maintain painting tools, equipment, materials, and work areas in an organized and safe condition.

General Facility Maintenance

• Perform preventative maintenance and general building repairs throughout the facility.
• Assist with basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, hardware, and mechanical repairs.
• Troubleshoot common facility problems and determine the safest and most practical solution.
• Repair doors, locks, fixtures, furniture, ceilings, flooring, trim, and other building components.
• Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests from staff, members, and guests.
• Monitor building systems and respond to alarms, equipment failures, leaks, and emergency conditions.
• Maintain the safety, cleanliness, security, and professional appearance of the building, grounds, and parking areas.
• Assist with facility setups, breakdowns, special events, and YMCA programs.
• Assist with receiving deliveries and ensuring that contracted work meets quality and scheduling expectations.
• Maintain an organized inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, paint, and equipment.

Inspections, Documentation, and Communication

• Conduct and document daily facility inspections.
• Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance records, inspection reports, and project updates.
• Communicate clearly with the Director of Facilities regarding building conditions, completed work, outstanding repairs, and potential concerns.
• Identify developing problems before they become larger or more expensive repairs.
• Coordinate professionally with contractors, vendors, service providers, YMCA staff, and members.
• Follow all applicable health, safety, environmental, and building requirements.

Pool and Emergency Support

• Support pool operations and water-quality management when qualified and assigned.
• Participate in emergency response procedures and facility incident response.
• Be available for occasional after-hours, weekend, or emergency facility issues as needed.
• Perform additional duties and projects assigned by the Director of Facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least two years of experience in professional painting, facility maintenance, construction, building operations, or a related trade.
• Strong hands-on experience with interior and exterior painting.
• Demonstrated ability to perform drywall repair, patching, caulking, sanding, priming, staining, and finish work.
• Ability to produce clean, professional, and visually consistent results.
• General working knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and building maintenance.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to use common sense when diagnosing and resolving problems.
• Ability to recognize when a repair can be completed internally and when a licensed contractor or specialist is required.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and complete assignments without constant supervision.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and maintenance equipment.
• Knowledge of proper tool use, workplace safety practices, and job-site protection.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
• Dependable, adaptable, and willing to assist wherever needed.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and customer-service skills.
• Basic computer proficiency, including email, electronic work orders, and Microsoft Office applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification. Candidates with an active CPO certification will receive strong consideration.
• Additional professional painting, drywall, carpentry, or building-trade experience.
• Experience working in a recreational, educational, hospitality, healthcare, institutional, or commercial facility.
• Experience using a computerized maintenance management system or electronic work-order platform.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability to safely climb ladders and work from elevated surfaces.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
• Ability to work around pools, mechanical rooms, construction areas, chemicals, noise, dust, and active public spaces.
• Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all safety procedures.
