Occupational Summary
A Summer Camp Counselor supervises and engages children and teens in recreational, educational, and social activities during summer camp programs. Counselors help create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment while encouraging teamwork, creativity, confidence, and positive behavior. The role requires strong communication skills, leadership, patience, and the ability to actively support campers of different ages and backgrounds.
- Work is typically performed in an indoor and outdoor summer camp setting, 8:30am - 4:30pm
- Requires standing, walking, running, and participating in activities for extended periods
- May require working in warm weather conditions and supervising outdoor activities
- Frequent interaction with children, teens, camp staff, and parents
- Requires patience, attentiveness, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple campers or tasks at once

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Engages elementary age students in academic learning through reading and math tutoring
- Supervise and engage campers during daily activities, games, and events
- Lead and assist with recreational, educational, and team-building activities
- Encourage positive behavior, teamwork, and participation among campers
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times
- Create a fun, respectful, and supportive camp environment
- Assist campers with problem-solving, conflict resolution, and social interaction skills
- Monitor camper participation and provide encouragement and positive feedback
- Communicate professionally with campers, staff, and parents when needed
- Help set up, organize, and clean activity areas and camp materials
- Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to camp policies
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled student at Craven Community College and eligible for the Work-Study Program
- Reliable, responsible, and able to maintain professionalism
- Positive attitude, energy, and enthusiasm for working with youth
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to work well with children and teens from diverse backgrounds
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
