Job Description

Fiber Splicer

Every splice you make is part of the path a home or business takes to get online, and that''s the work Telecon builds toward: connecting the communities, businesses, and homes of tomorrow.

Telecon is looking for an experienced Fiber Splicer to splice, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic cable on fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) projects across the Puget Sound region, based out of our Tacoma, WA yard with current job sites in Bellevue. This role is for someone who has already put real hours in behind a fusion splicer and knows what clean, organized work looks like, because a single speck of dust is the difference between a good splice and a burn.

Most of your day is spent in the back of a splice trailer or inside buildings, working 0 to 144 count fiber on new and existing cable. Most of that cable is buried or underground, with some aerial. You''ll test your work with an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR), power meter, and visual fault locator (VFL). When fibers listed as available turn out not to be lit, you''re the one who tracks down why. When the job calls for it, you''ll also help place cable and support the construction crew. The work is detailed and repetitive, and you''ll be outdoors in whatever Pacific Northwest weather the week brings. Expect a 7:00 AM start, typically 8 to 10 hours a day, five days a week, with infrequent night work. Telecon provides the Fujikura splicer, test equipment, and splice trailer. This is also the first time we''re hiring this role locally, as Telecon continues to grow its presence in Washington.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Job site locations in Bellevue, WA
  • Wage: $29.00 - $42.00 per hour with potential for overtime
  • Shift/Schedule: Day shift, 7:00 AM start, typically 8 to 10 hours per day, five days a week

Responsibilities

  • Splice fiber optic cable from 0 to 144 count in all outside plant applications, mainly buried and underground with occasional aerial work, on both newly placed and existing cable, as well as individual splices inside buildings
  • Test splices using an OTDR, power meter, and VFL, analyze results, and work with the team to troubleshoot and fix bad splices
  • Track down and resolve issues when fiber assignments don''t match field conditions, such as fibers listed as available that aren''t lit
  • Read and interpret placing and splicing work plans and job specifications, and complete all assigned work safely in accordance with Telecon''s Health and Safety policy
  • Verify existing infrastructure by accessing underground and aerial enclosures, such as handholes, vaults, and pedestals, and document results
  • Help place copper or fiber optic telecommunication cables outdoors in various conditions as the job requires
  • Climb ladders and a variety of construction equipment to assist in installing telecommunication cables and apparatus
  • Keep your splicing work area, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and well maintained
  • Accurately record and report project progress to your supervisor, and communicate any issues or expected delays
  • Infrequent night work as needed
  • Other duties as required

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of fiber splicing experience, including 0 to 144 count fiber
  • High school diploma or relevant work experience
  • Competency with OTDR, power meter, VFL, and other fiber testing protocols
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting experience
  • Ability to read and interpret placing and splicing plans
  • Valid driver''s license and ability to drive Department of Transportation (DOT) vehicles; a Commercial Driver''s License (CDL) is not required
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English, including work plans and safety documentation
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety, and willingness to complete First Aid, Confined Space, and fall protection training (provided on hire)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with emergency fiber restoration, cutovers, and night or day cuts
  • Experience splicing on fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or multi-dwelling unit (MDU) projects
  • Power Supply Activation / ROLT experience

This position requires successful completion of a background check and motor vehicle record (MVR) review, as applicable.
