    Position Overview

    Come join us at the leading edge of clean diesel technology! Northern Lights Power & Energy is the West Coast distributor for MAN and Nanni high-performance diesel engines.

    The Field Service Technician II is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, maintaining, and repairing customer-owned diesel engines and related equipment in the field. This includes troubleshooting, maintenance, overhaul, cleaning, inspection, repair, and assembly of components and systems in pleasure and commercial marine environments.

    This position requires demonstrated mechanical and electrical skills, the ability to perform field-service assignments with limited supervision, and a commitment to providing safe, professional, and high-quality customer service.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

    • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and diesel engine systems on customer equipment.
    • Conduct inspections and diagnostic testing to identify worn, damaged, or malfunctioning components and determine appropriate repairs.
    • Diagnose and correct diesel engine deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing assemblies, subassemblies, components, and parts.
    • Diagnose and repair related systems, including power and drivetrain, electrical, fuel, cooling, air-conditioning, and emissions systems, as applicable.
    • Perform assigned field-service work with limited supervision and seek technical assistance when appropriate for highly complex repairs or unfamiliar conditions.
    • Complete accurate and timely service reports, work orders, labor-hour records, parts documentation, and other required service documentation.
    • Identify and obtain or request parts and materials necessary to complete assigned repairs.
    • Communicate professionally with customers regarding service needs, repairs, equipment conditions, and other service-related matters.
    • Provide technical assistance to less-experienced technicians when requested.
    • Travel to customer locations and job sites as required, including travel on short notice when business needs require.
    • Operate Company vehicles as necessary to travel to customer locations and perform field-service responsibilities.
    • Maintain a regular and reliable work schedule.
    • Follow all Company safety procedures and applicable customer and job-site safety requirements.
    • Maintain Company and customer equipment, tools, and work areas in a safe and professional manner.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications & Skills:

    • Demonstrated mechanical, electrical, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills.
    • Working knowledge of diesel engines and related mechanical and electrical systems.
    • Ability to diagnose and complete routine to moderately complex diesel engine repairs with limited supervision.
    • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, service documentation, standard operating procedures, schematics, product information, and safety and warning labels.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills and the ability to use electronic service, diagnostic, and documentation systems.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment in field-service environments.
    • Strong commitment to workplace, equipment, and customer safety.
    • Ability to interact professionally with customers, including handling difficult or time-sensitive service situations.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage changing priorities.
    • Ability and willingness to travel as required, including on short notice.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet Company driving requirements, as driving to customer locations and job sites is an essential function of this position.

    Education & Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
    • At least two years of relevant experience performing technical repairs on diesel engines or comparable equipment.
    • Demonstrated technical and mechanical skills and working knowledge of diesel engine systems.
    • Post-secondary vocational or technical education in diesel technology, automotive technology, marine technology, or a related field is strongly preferred.
    • Applicable manufacturer or systems certifications preferred.
    • Manufacturer-specific training or certification may be required based on assigned work.

    Work Environment:

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee may frequently work around moving mechanical parts, engines, machinery, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and other conditions commonly associated with marine and diesel-service environments.

    Work may be performed aboard vessels, at customer locations, in shops, marinas, boatyards, engine rooms, and other field-service environments. The employee may work indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, confined spaces, and wet or slippery surfaces.

    Noise levels may be loud. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required by Company policy, applicable regulations, and job-site requirements.

    This is an active position that frequently requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, and working in confined or restricted spaces.

    The employee must be able to communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and others and exchange accurate information.

    The employee must frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, consistent with safe work practices and available lifting assistance.

    The position requires the visual ability necessary to inspect equipment and components, read gauges and technical information, identify defects, and safely perform detailed mechanical and electrical work at varying distances.

    Tool Requirements:

    • Employee must maintain a complete set of hand tools appropriate for the duties of the position and in accordance with Company requirements.
    • Employee is responsible for maintaining personally supplied tools in safe and serviceable condition.

    • Performs work safely and with appropriate regard for coworkers, customers, Company property, customer property, and individual safety.
    • Works effectively with others and contributes to teamwork, productivity, and a professional work environment.
    • Maintains professional conduct when working at customer locations and representing Northern Lights Power & Energy.
