Great Lakes Home Remodeling | Toledo, OH

Salary: $95,000–$115,000 per year
Job Type: Full-Time
Work Location: On-site, Toledo, Ohio

Great Lakes Home Remodeling is a growing, locally owned home improvement company specializing in roofing, siding, windows, doors, and exterior remodeling. With operations in Toledo, Detroit, and Cleveland, we're continuing to expand and strengthen our leadership team.

We're looking for an experienced, hands on Financial Controller who can oversee our accounting operations, manage company expenses, improve financial reporting, and help us build a more efficient and profitable business.

This is not simply a bookkeeping or reporting position. We're looking for someone who understands the numbers, recognizes opportunities for improvement, and takes ownership of the company's financial processes.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and cash flow reporting.

  • Track financial performance by location, department, and business segment.

  • Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and financial performance reports.

  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end closing procedures.

Payroll & Compensation

  • Oversee payroll processing, accuracy, and reconciliation.

  • Review employee compensation, sales commissions, bonuses, and incentive programs.

  • Monitor payroll expenses and labor costs by department and location.

  • Work with HR to ensure accurate payroll records and appropriate compliance.

  • Oversee proper accounting and documentation of independent contractor payments.

Expense Management & Profitability

  • Monitor company spending, overhead, vendor payments, and operating expenses.

  • Identify unnecessary expenses and recommend cost-saving opportunities.

  • Review material, labor, subcontractor, and installation costs.

  • Implement and maintain accurate job-costing procedures.

  • Analyze job margins, gross profit, and overall profitability.

  • Develop spending controls, purchasing procedures, and accountability standards.

Financial Controls & Leadership

  • Establish and improve internal accounting policies and financial controls.

  • Provide financial reporting and recommendations directly to ownership.

  • Work closely with department managers to maintain budgets and control costs.

  • Coordinate with outside accountants, tax professionals, and financial advisors.

  • Improve financial systems, reporting processes, and operational efficiency.

  • Assist with financial planning as the company continues to grow.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.

  • Experience managing financial reporting, payroll, budgets, and company expenses.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial controls.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with accounting software.

  • Proven ability to analyze expenses, identify financial issues, and improve processes.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager.

  • Experience in construction, home improvement, contracting, or service-based businesses.

  • Knowledge of job costing, project profitability, and subcontractor accounting.

  • Experience supporting multiple company locations.

  • CPA or CMA designation is a plus, but not required.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, financially disciplined, and comfortable being hands-on.

The ideal candidate won't simply provide financial statements. They'll help us understand where we're making money, where expenses need attention, and what changes we can make to improve overall profitability.

We value accountability, sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to work directly with company ownership and department leadership.

Why Join Great Lakes?

  • Competitive salary of $85,000–$115,000 based on experience.

  • Opportunity to join an established and growing company.

  • Direct involvement with ownership and company leadership.

  • The ability to make a measurable impact on the company's financial performance.

  • Opportunity to help develop systems and processes that support long-term growth.

  • Privately owned business with operations across multiple markets.

If you're an experienced accounting or financial professional looking for a leadership opportunity where your work can make a meaningful difference, we'd like to hear from you.
