Job Description:
Elevare Behavioral Health is seeking a PRN Financial Counselor to support the admissions and patient financial services process for individuals entering behavioral health and substance use treatment. This position is responsible for verifying insurance benefits, reviewing estimated patient responsibility, collecting required payments, arranging approved payment plans, and helping patients and families understand the financial aspects of treatment.The Financial Counselor works closely with Admissions, Utilization Review, Billing, Clinical Services, and facility leadership to identify and resolve financial barriers before admission and throughout the patient’s stay. The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, confident discussing financial obligations, and experienced with insurance verification, patient collections, and healthcare documentation. This is a PRN position with hours scheduled based on admission volume, department coverage, and facility needs.
Responsibilities:
- Verify active insurance coverage, eligibility, behavioral health benefits, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximums, and coverage limitations before admission.
- Review insurance information and benefit findings with patients or authorized representatives, including estimated financial responsibility and services that may not be covered.
- Collect deposits, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, outstanding balances, and other required patient payments according to facility policies.
- Establish approved payment arrangements, obtain required signatures, and clearly communicate payment due dates and expectations.
- Identify financial barriers that may delay or prevent admission and work with Admissions, Billing, and leadership to determine appropriate next steps.
- Document all insurance verification results, financial counseling discussions, payment commitments, collection attempts, and patient communications accurately in the designated system.
- Assist patients and families with financial assistance applications, payment resources, required forms, and supporting documentation when applicable.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, finance, or a related field preferred.
- At least one year of experience in healthcare admissions, insurance verification, billing, collections, patient financial services, or revenue cycle operations preferred.
- Experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, hospital, residential treatment, or another healthcare setting preferred.
- Working knowledge of insurance eligibility, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket limits, authorizations, and patient responsibility calculations.
- Strong communication and customer service skills, including the ability to discuss sensitive financial matters with professionalism and compassion.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to review insurance information, calculate estimated balances, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple admissions, meet deadlines, follow up on pending information, and work effectively with clinical and administrative teams.
- PRN availability, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, and additional coverage based on facility and admission needs.
