Structural Welder Job Description

The candidate should possess a minimum of five years welding experience in shipyard with flux-core arc welding (FCAW). FCAW is a minimum requirement for ALL welding positions. Work will be performed in shop, production table, and shipboard environments.

Using the approved parameters and filler materials, the welder will weld various joints (fillet, groove, and lap) in all positions and with multiple passes. The completed welds must meet quality standards and work must be performed in accordance with safety policies and procedures.

The welder will also perform cutting and gouging with carbon electrodes to cut, shape, and groove metal. The welder will also use various pneumatic and electric tools to grind excess materials, remove discrepancies, and clean weld joints.

Assessment Criteria

If a candidate was previously certified at NASSCO, but the certifications are currently expired, the candidate will need to recertify by accomplishing a 3G (3/8" groove weld joint with steel backing). Candidates who are new or do not have certification records in the company's system will need to complete the assessment requirements described below.

Note: During the assessment and requalification, the candidate must follow all safety procedures. Any safety infractions will result in disqualification.

FCAW Welding Process

The candidate must demonstrate the consistent ability to perform flux core arc welding with carbon dioxide (CO2) shielding gas.

During the assessment process, the candidate must demonstrate the following:

• Perform assessment safely (adhere to all safety requirements)
• Conduct shielding gas drop test
• Change wire
• Measure fillet welds
• Set weld parameters and achieve proper surface preparation prior welding.

Perform welds that pass all required tests (visual inspection, fracture test, and ultrasound test).
