HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT:

The Division of Fleet Services is responsible for maintaining and supporting the Town's fleet of approximately 800 vehicles and equipment. An employee in this class serves as a journey-level Fleet Maintenance Technician and performs a wide range of preventive maintenance and repair activities on Town-owned vehicles and equipment.

Work includes diagnosing and repairing routine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues with limited supervision. The Technician II operates with increasing independence, completes assigned repairs, and supports entry-level technicians as needed. This position requires sound mechanical knowledge, the ability to follow established procedures, and the application of standard diagnostic practices.

This position reports to the Fleet Services Supervisor. Employees may be subject to on-call or callback during emergency situations or inclement weather.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:

• Performs preventive maintenance and routine repair work on light-, medium-, and selected heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues using standard diagnostic methods and tools.
• Removes, repairs, and replaces components such as brakes, suspension components, batteries, starters, alternators, belts, hoses, lighting, and basic electrical wiring.
• Performs repairs to engines, exhaust, transmission, brake, HVAC, and hydraulic systems within established skill level.
• Test drives vehicles and equipment to diagnose concerns and verify proper operation following repairs.
• Responds to road service calls and performs on-site repairs when feasible.
• Conducts North Carolina vehicle safety and emissions inspections and maintains required documentation.
• Completes work orders accurately, documenting labor, parts, diagnostics, and corrective actions in the fleet maintenance system.
• Identifies required parts and materials; assists with warranty verification and cost containment efforts.
• Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Communicates with Fleet staff and customer departments regarding repair status and maintenance needs.
• Assists with mentoring entry-level technicians and supporting training activities as directed.
• Follows all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations including OSHA standards and Town safety practices.
• Performs related duties as required.

WHAT SETS YOU UP FOR SUCCESS:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of related automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience.
• North Carolina State Inspection License or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
• North Carolina Class A CDL or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
• Forklift Certification or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
• 2 ASE certifications - each ASE certification may be substituted with 20 hours of in person manufacturer specific training.
