Description

The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance on light duty fleet vehicles to include service and mechanical repairs, fueling, oiling, and refilling of lubricants, and maintaining records of service and repair.

Examples of Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Evaluates, detects, and diagnoses major and/or minor mechanical problems on vehicles and/or equipment; implements required repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Prepares and submits work orders.
  • Measures, designs, and fabricates structures for use in/on vehicles and/or equipment; may build/rebuild transmissions and engines for various makes and models of vehicles; and may deliver fuel.
  • Changes tires and repairs flats, balances wheels, performs tune ups, changes filters and wipers.
  • Picks up and cleans parts, cleans and rebuilds components and subassemblies.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and equipment for fleet maintenance.
  • Maintains records of vehicle use, repairs and history.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Clean and wash motorized equipment.
  • Lubricate automotive and power-driven equipment using air pressure and lubrication tools.
  • Drain and refill crankcases, inspect and fill gearboxes with lubricants, replace lubricant fittings, and maintain accurate lubrication records and stock levels.
  • Clean and wash motorized equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Assist other technicians with mechanical overhauls and repair work as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of time, materials, and parts used during repairs.
  • Pack and replace wheel bearings to ensure smooth operation.
  • Replace worn parts, such as struts/shock absorbers, fan/serpentine belts, radiator hoses, and u-joints.
  • Perform general overhauls, tune-ups, and repairs on automobiles and related power-driven equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary components, including cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems.
  • Fabricate and modify parts and equipment when authorized.
  • Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition systems, electrical systems, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic systems; inspect and assemble automotive electrical systems.
  • Conduct inspections of automotive or mechanical equipment to assess repair needs and estimate costs; perform occasional metal work, including cutting and welding.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
  • Over one year and up to and including two years of automotive systems and repairs or related experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
