Fossil Preparator

Overview:

The Department of Geosciences at Princeton University seeks a skilled Fossil Preparator to support vertebrate paleontological research. This position executes fossil preparation and conservation work on specimens collected from an active field program and supports the lab's broader research, teaching, and outreach mission. The successful candidate will prepare vertebrate fossils using mechanical and chemical techniques, assist in specimen documentation and curation, organize and coordinate all preparatory activities in the laboratory, and assist in field excavation.

Responsibilities:

• Executes mechanical and chemical preparation of vertebrate fossil specimens, including matrix removal, consolidation, and stabilization, using tools and materials appropriate for specimen type and fragility.
• Documents all preparation and conservation treatments, including before/after photography and written treatment records, and maintains specimen records in the lab's collection database.
• Selects preparation techniques and materials appropriate to each specimen in consultation with the Principal Investigator, balancing exposure of anatomical information against long-term specimen integrity.
• Maintains preparation lab space, tools, and consumable supplies, including upkeep of pneumatic tools, adhesives, and consolidants.
• Assists with specimen molding and casting as needed for research, teaching, or exhibition use.
• Supports specimen packing, transport, and loan preparation in coordination with collections staff.
• Assist with field collection of fossil specimens during scheduled fieldwork, including jacketing and safe transport of specimens from remote localities.
• Trains and supervises students, volunteers, and other lab personnel in preparation techniques and laboratory safety.
• Oversees care of historic Princeton Museum collections.
• Performs other duties as assigned in support of lab research and operations.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in geology, paleontology, biology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on preparation experience.
• Demonstrated experience preparing fossil vertebrate specimens, whether through prior employment, internship, or extensive volunteer work in a museum or academic preparation lab.
• Working knowledge of preventive conservation principles, archival adhesives and consolidants, and safe handling of fragile specimens.
• Meticulous attention to detail and the patience required for slow, methodical preparation work.
• Ability to follow Safety Data Sheets and select appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Strong written communication skills for maintaining preparation and treatment records.

Preferred:

• Experience with pneumatic air scribes and other mechanical preparation tools.
• Experience with molding and casting techniques.
• Prior fieldwork experience collecting vertebrate fossils.
