    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY
     
    The Gallery & Cultural Heritage Assistant helps care for and bring attention to Bennett College’s art, historic objects, and cultural heritage. Working primarily in the beautiful, historic Steele Gallery in Steele Hall, student assistants will help welcome visitors, keep the Gallery open, and support exhibitions, research, organization, and other creative projects.
    This position is ideal for a curious, dependable student who takes initiative, follows directions, and can solve routine problems independently. No previous gallery or museum experience is required – curiosity and a willingness to learn are most important.
     
     
    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Welcome Gallery visitors and help create a friendly, engaging environment.
    • Staff selected Gallery hours as part of a student team.
    • Help photograph, research, organize, and document Bennett’s art and historic materials.
    • Assist with Gallery files, labels, signs, displays, and other projects.
    • Observe and report concerns involving artwork or the Gallery space.
    • Assist with exhibition setup, deinstallation, programs, and special events.
    • Help keep Gallery and project areas organized and ready for visitors.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.
     
    QUALIFICATIONS
    • Must be eligible for federal work study and in good academic standing.
    • Responsible, punctual, reliable, and able to communicate promptly.
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Able to follow directions, pay attention to details, and solve routine problems.
    • Friendly and comfortable interacting with fellow students and visitors.
    • Interest in art, history, culture, research, or Bennett’s heritage is welcomed but not required.
     
    WORK SCHEDULE
    • Gallery coverage is shared by a team of student assistants. Students are not expected to be available for every Gallery shift.
    • Gallery hours will likely be Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., with one weekly evening opening from approximately 6:00–8:00 or 9:00 p.m.
    • We will work with each student to identify regular hours that fit her class schedule, availability, and federal work study award.
    • Occasional additional hours may be available for programs, special events, exhibition setup, and deinstallation, based on student availability and with advance notice whenever possible.
     
    COMPENSATION
     
    Hourly rate based on federal work study guidelines.
