    Generator Systems Diagnostic Technician (ATS/Paralleling)

    Why this role matters

Critical facilities rely on power that simply cannot fail. In this role, you’ll be the expert who keeps generator systems—from compact 2 kW backup sets to 3 MW industrial units—maintained, tested, and repaired so customers can operate with confidence.

    Your impact

    • Ensure generator reliability through preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair in shop and field environments.
    • Execute load bank tests; test, troubleshoot, and repair automatic and static transfer switches; evaluate complete system performance.
    • Diagnose diesel and gaseous fuel systems; conduct both minor and major engine repairs.
    • Use schematics, service literature, and diagnostic equipment to pinpoint electrical and mechanical faults.
    • Source, install, and validate parts; complete repairs to OEM standards and specifications.
    • Install full generator packages and supporting peripherals per engineering materials and specifications.
    • Work primarily off-site with limited supervision; mentor apprentices and collaborate with peers to meet deadlines and quality expectations.
    • Deliver clear, customer-friendly explanations of findings, maintenance needs, and recommended corrective actions.
    • Produce accurate, thorough service reports; uphold safety, quality, and company procedures.
    • Operate forklifts, mobile cranes, and heavy equipment safely in line with OSHA requirements.
    • Participate in after-hours on-call rotations; support irregular schedules including weekends and holidays; travel occasionally with some overnight stays.
    • Follow company policies and safety rules; perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum qualifications

    • Multiple years in generator service—or equivalent military/technical background (automotive, transportation, commercial electrical, etc.).
    • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting proficiency; experience with diesel and/or gaseous engines.
    • Ability to interpret electrical/mechanical drawings and technical documentation.
    • Clear written and verbal communication; strong customer interaction skills.
    • Self-directed with minimal supervision; high accountability for results.
    • Safe, proper use of common hand tools and diagnostic instruments.
    • Personal toolkit: multimeter; standard/metric socket and wrench sets; screwdrivers; Allen wrenches; pliers; crimpers; and related tools.
    • Accurate documentation and reporting habits.
    • Physically able to perform field service work around engines, electrical systems, and heavy machinery.
    • Valid driver’s license; ability to travel to customer locations, including occasional overnight trips.
    • Willing to work weekends/holidays, irregular hours, and take part in on-call rotation.

    Preferred background

    • Hands-on with ATS, static transfer switches, and multi-unit paralleling systems.
    • Technical/vocational education in electrical, mechanical, automotive, diesel, transportation, or related fields.
    • Commercial/residential electrical experience; military mechanical/electrical experience.
    • Service exposure across 2 kW–3 MW systems; diesel and gaseous-fueled platforms.
    • Experience with load banks, generator testing tools; OSHA-related equipment operation.

    Competencies we value

    • Advanced diagnostic skills for complex engine/electrical issues.
    • Fluency with schematics, manuals, and test equipment.
    • Structured problem-solving; strong attention to detail and first-time-right mindset.
    • Ability to communicate complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Continuous learner who shares knowledge and mentors others.
    • Leadership potential—able to guide technicians and apprentices.
    • Safety-first approach; able to prioritize and execute efficiently.

    Work conditions

    • Shop and field environments with frequent travel; occasional overnight stays.
    • Work around running engines, energized equipment, heavy machinery, and fuel systems.
    • Operate/operate around forklifts, mobile cranes, and other heavy equipment safely.
    • Use of hand tools and diagnostic equipment daily; strict adherence to OSHA and company safety practices.

    • Explain equipment condition and maintenance plans clearly.
    • Provide accurate technical insights; complete work efficiently with safety and quality at the forefront.
