Position Summary:

The Global Cold Chain & HVAC SME provides global technical leadership and functional expertise for temperature-controlled storage, refrigeration, ultra-low-temperature systems, HVAC, controls, and environmental monitoring across the CTD network. The role establishes global engineering standards, assesses network capability and risk, develops technical roadmaps, and partners with Regional Engineering Directors and site teams to drive consistent, compliant, reliable, and sustainable Cold Chain and HVAC solutions. As a global functional authority, the role influences across a matrix organization to advance technical capability, support capital planning, and mitigate operational and business continuity risks.

Responsibilities:

Global Technical Leadership & Standards

  • Serve as CTD's global technical authority for Cold Chain and HVAC, establishing engineering standards, design principles, specifications, and best practices for temperature-controlled storage, refrigeration, ULT systems, HVAC, controls, and environmental monitoring.
  • Drive harmonization of Cold Chain and HVAC capabilities across the CTD network, partnering with Regional Engineering Directors and site teams to translate global standards into practical site-level solutions.
  • Lead technology evaluation and technical decision-making for emerging Cold Chain, HVAC, refrigeration, monitoring, and sustainable technologies, establishing preferred solutions and deployment strategies where appropriate.
  • Provide expert technical consultation and escalation support for complex engineering challenges, major projects, deviations, investigations, customer requirements, and significant operational risks.

Network Assessment, Strategy & Master Planning

  • Develop and maintain a global Cold Chain and HVAC capability roadmap, identifying network capacity, infrastructure, technology, lifecycle, and compliance needs aligned with CTD growth and business strategy.
  • Lead standardized network assessments to identify Cold Chain and HVAC capability gaps, capacity constraints, asset lifecycle risks, compliance vulnerabilities, and opportunities for standardization.
  • Partner with Regional Engineering Directors and sites on HVAC and Cold Chain master planning, translating identified risks and capability needs into prioritized multi-year capital and infrastructure roadmaps.
  • Provide technical input to capital portfolio prioritization, ensuring investments appropriately address business continuity, capacity, compliance, asset condition, sustainability, and operational risk.

Compliance, Risk & Business Continuity

  • Establish technical expectations for qualification and lifecycle management of Cold Chain and HVAC systems in alignment with applicable GxP, GDP, regulatory, quality, and engineering requirements.
  • Lead technical risk assessments for critical temperature-controlled infrastructure, establishing consistent methodologies for identifying, evaluating, mitigating, and escalating network risks.
  • Define engineering expectations for resilience and business continuity, including redundancy, backup power, alarm management, contingency strategies, and recovery of critical temperature-controlled operations.
  • Partner with Quality and site teams during significant investigations, audits, inspections, and customer engagements, providing SME leadership for complex Cold Chain and HVAC matters.

Capability Building & Continuous Improvement

  • Build Cold Chain and HVAC technical capability across CTD through standards, playbooks, training, communities of practice, lessons learned, and knowledge-sharing across sites and regions.
  • Establish performance measures and benchmarking to identify trends, recurring failure modes, technology opportunities, and improvement priorities across the network.
  • Drive continuous improvement and sustainability through energy-efficient HVAC/refrigeration solutions, lifecycle optimization, improved controls, and adoption of appropriate emerging technologies.
  • Develop and leverage external technical partnerships with suppliers, engineering firms, technology providers, and enterprise SMEs to strengthen CTD capability and accelerate deployment of best practices.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree, and advance degree is highly preferred.
  • Preferred Fields of Study: Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical) or related technical discipline, or Business Administration.
  • 10+ years of progressive Cold Chain, HVAC, facilities or related engineering experience within pharmaceutical, biotech, clinical supply, or another regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and deploying engineering standards, technical strategies, or capability programs across multiple sites or regions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in temperature-controlled systems, HVAC/refrigeration, environmental monitoring, qualification/validation, asset lifecycle management, and technical risk management.
  • Proven ability to lead complex global initiatives and influence senior stakeholders, technical teams, and site leadership without direct reporting authority.

  • Knowledge of Refrigerators, cold rooms, freezers, and freezer rooms Ultra-low-temperature freezers, Cryogenic storage systems Refrigeration systems and controls
  • Understanding of HVAC design, operation, maintenance, and qualification Building-management and environmental-monitoring systems
  • Experience with Temperature and humidity mapping, Alarm management
  • Root-cause analysis and risk assessment Backup power and business-continuity systems Asset lifecycle and capital master planning
  • Energy efficiency and sustainable refrigeration technologies
  • Applicable GCP, GMP, GDP, pharmacopeial, regulatory, and industry requirements
  • Global technical leadership Strategic and master planning Technical standards development Risk-based decision-making
  • Capital prioritization Technology assessment Program and project management Technical writing and documentation Data analysis and performance trending
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization across multiple sites and functions
  • Ability to travel 25-40% globally
  • Valid passport required for international travel

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in is £65,300.00-£97,925.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
