Description / Position Overview

Golf Course Superintendent

The City of Colorado Springs Golf Division is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking golf course management professional to serve as Golf Course Superintendent at Patty Jewett Golf Course, one of the oldest continuously operated public courses west of the Mississippi. Featuring 27 holes, a pro shop, restaurant, and driving range, Patty Jewett is a historic community asset that has served generations of residents and visitors.

The City continues to invest in the course's long-term sustainability and playability, including a modern Toro Lynx irrigation system installed in 2025. The ideal candidate will combine strong agronomic knowledge with effective leadership, solid fiscal management, and a dedication to delivering exceptional playing conditions and customer service in a high-volume municipal environment.

Work Schedule: During the golfing season Monday through Friday 5:00am - 1:30pm. The schedule shifts to 6:00am-2:30pm during the shoulder seasons and winter months. Employee will be expected to work rotating weekend shifts, in addition to scheduled holidays.

As Golf Course Superintendent, you will:

  • Plan, direct, and oversee the maintenance and conditioning of Patty Jewett Golf Course to provide safe, consistent, and high-quality playing conditions across all 27 holes and clubhouse grounds.
  • Lead, supervise, evaluate, and develop assistant superintendents, the equipment mechanic, and seasonal maintenance staff while establishing clear expectations and performance standards.
  • Establish and implement annual and seasonal maintenance priorities, determine the work to be completed, and identify the personnel, equipment, materials, and financial resources needed to accomplish the work.
  • Develop and administer the golf course maintenance budget, monitor expenditures, approve purchases and employee time, maintain required records, and plan for equipment replacement and capital improvement needs.
  • Oversee turf management, irrigation water use, cultural practices, fertilizer and pesticide applications, course setup, and golf course improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with the Golf Division Manager and golf operations staff regarding course conditions, maintenance schedules, tournaments, projects, regulatory requirements, and operational priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance, including experience as an assistant golf course superintendent or in a comparable role.
  • Two years of administrator and/or supervisor experience managing performance and supporting employee training and development.
  • Be a GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of America) Class A member within 3 years of hire.
  • Possess upon hire a Pesticide Applicator License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Experience developing and managing operating budgets, monitoring expenditures, purchasing materials and equipment, and planning for equipment replacement and golf course improvement projects.
  • Experience managing a high-volume, 27-hole public-access resort, private club, or similarly complex golf facility.
  • Experience with modern irrigation systems and central control, including Toro Lynx Central Control and Toro irrigation equipment.
  • Experience planning and executing golf course renovation, construction, capital improvement, or major infrastructure projects, including coordination with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing golf course maintenance priorities, allocating resources, developing employees, controlling costs, and maintaining consistent playing conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of cool-season turfgrass management, irrigation and water conservation, integrated pest management, regulatory compliance, and turf management practices applicable to Colorado's climate.
