JOB SUMMARY
Employees in this class of position are responsible for performing work of manual nature, which is usually performed under immediate supervision. They are responsible for carrying out assigned tasks as safely, effectively and efficiently as possible.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Clears right-of-ways.
- Cuts grass with a push mower.
- Used a weed eater.
- Uses an edger.
- Fills potholes.
- Trims hedges.
- Landscaping in parks and along roadways of the city.
- Occasionally drives trucks.
- Mandatory from time to time to ride the back of the Sanitation Truck as a back-up refuse collector.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of the geography of the City of Metter.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for an extended period of time.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
- Ability to acquire some skill in the use of small hand tools used in the area of assignment.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Street & Lane Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, supervisory instructions, and safety regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related duties associated with the maintenance of city streets, ditches and right-of-ways. Cold, hot or inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of city streets, ditches, parks and right-of-ways. Successful performance helps ensures the efficient and effective operation of the city.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, property owners, business owners, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve work related problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold, hot or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as goggles, safety vest or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and acquire some skill in the use of small hand tools used in the area of assignment.
- Be in good physical condition.
- Poses a High School diploma or GED.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Georgia issued driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to pass a Drug and Alcohol Test.
