This is a foundational hire. The successful candidate will be a builder - an energetic recruiter, an exceptional teacher of the game, and a culture-setter who embraces Hamptons legacy and the unique opportunity of leading a Division I volleyball program at a premier HBCU. The Head Coach will operate with full commitment to NCAA, CAA, and University rules, and will represent Hampton with professionalism and pride in every setting.

Examples of Duties

Program Leadership and Competitive Excellence

  • Plan, organize, and conduct all practices, training sessions, film study, and competition, including game-day strategy and in-match decision-making.
  • Establish a program of culture rooted in accountability, discipline, work ethic, and team unity.
  • Develop competitive non-conference schedules that balance student-athlete development, RPI/NET considerations, budget, travel, and missed class time.
  • Coordinate with strength and conditioning and sports medicine staff on year-round training, injury prevention, recovery, and return-to-play plans.

Recruiting and Roster Management

  • Lead the identification, evaluation, and recruitment of talented, academically qualified prospective student-athletes through high school, club (JVA/AAU/USAV), junior college, international, and transfer portal channels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with club directors, high school coaches, and recruiting networks, with emphasis on the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and national HBCU pipelines.
  • Manage the roster within NCAA and University limits, including roster size and scholarship allocation in coordination with athletics leadership and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a multi-year roster and recruiting plan that addresses positional needs, graduation, and retention.

Student-Athlete Academic Success and Well-Being

  • Champion academic achievement and progress toward degree, partnering with Academic Support Services to meet or exceed NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) benchmarks.
  • Promote the holistic development of student-athletes, including leadership development, mental health and wellness, career readiness, and community engagement.
  • Support student-athletes in navigating name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities in accordance with NCAA, state, and University policies.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful environment and model for the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship.

Compliance and Integrity

  • Know, follow, and enforce all NCAA, CAA, and Hampton University rules, policies, and procedures; ensure assistant coaches and program personnel do the same.
  • Maintain accurate records related to recruiting contacts, countable athletically related activities (CARA), travel, and other compliance documentation.
  • Uphold Title IX, Clery Act, and University reporting obligations, and complete all required compliance and professional training.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches, graduate assistants, volunteers, student managers, and operations personnel, subject to departmental approval.
  • Mentor staff and invest in their professional growth, creating a high-performing, collaborative coaching team.

Budget and Operations

  • Manage the programs operating budget responsibly, including travel, recruiting, equipment, and team expenses, in accordance with university fiscal policies.
  • Oversee team travel, scheduling, equipment, and facility needs in coordination with athletics operations staff.

Fundraising, Community Engagement, and Program Visibility

  • Partner with the Hampton Athletics Foundation and Development staff to cultivate alumni, donors, and corporate partners in support of the volleyball program.
  • Organize and direct camps and clinics in accordance with University and NCAA policies, building visibility and recruiting pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing staff to grow fan engagement, attendance, and the programs digital and social media presence.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Hampton University with the media, alumni, the Hampton Roads community, and the broader volleyball community.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and/or Program Sport Administrator
