    Description of Work

    The Health Physicist I X-ray Inspector serves as a technical specialist responsible for conducting on‑site inspections of medical, industrial, veterinary, and research x‑ray machines to ensure compliance with radiation protection regulations. The position performs analytical and investigative work evaluating radiation‑producing devices, documenting inspection results, and maintaining accurate data within the agency’s database systems.

    Work includes preparing detailed reports, assessing radiological hazards, and recommending methods for maintaining radiation doses As Low As Reasonably Achievable. The role operates independently across varied environments and participates in emergency response activities as part of statewide preparedness efforts. The position supports safe use, management, and control of radiation‑producing equipment within the regulatory framework established for North Carolina.


    Key Duties Include:
    - Conduct on site inspections of medical and industrial radiation machines to determine compliance with North Carolina radiation protection regulations.

    - Evaluate radiation producing devices across diverse environments and document findings using established technical assessment methods.

    - Maintain current inspection and compliance data in agency database systems and ensure accuracy of all submitted records.

    - Prepare detailed written reports outlining inspection results, corrective recommendations, and and follow up requirements.

    - Functional knowledge of radiation survey equipment, radiation machines, and radiation testing instrumentation.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

    Salary Grade Range: $50,088.00 - $87,654.00

    Recruitment Range: $50,088.00 - $65,000.00

    The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: 

    • Demonstrates expert proficiency operating radiation survey equipment and radiation testing instrumentation to collect and evaluate radiological measurements during inspection activities.

    • Applies advanced skill in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting technical data obtained from inspections, environmental sampling, and hazard evaluations.

    • Utilizes intermediate proficiency with agency database systems and Microsoft applications to maintain inspection records, prepare technical documentation, and support tracking of regulatory actions.

    • Performs expert‑level evaluations of medical and industrial x‑ray machines, including hands‑on inspection experience across diverse environments to determine compliance with radiation protection standards.

    • Demonstrates advanced capability in identifying unsafe practices, assessing radiological hazards, and recommending corrective actions that support ALARA principles and regulatory compliance.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Candidate must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

    About the Division of Health Service Regulation:
    The Division of Health Service Regulation oversees medical, mental health and adult care facilities, emergency medical services, and local jails. We check to see that people receiving care in these facilities are safe and receive appropriate care. We make certain that medical buildings are built only when there is a need for them.

    About Radiation Protection Services:

    Radiation Protection Services (RPS) administers several programs in order to provide protection from the harmful effects of radiation for occupational workers, the public and the environment. The regulatory programs include x-ray, mammography, radioactive materials, and tanning. The non-regulatory programs include radon, fixed nuclear facility emergency response, and environmental monitoring efforts. Under the auspices of the Radiation Protection Commission, RPS strives to maintain a healthy balance between regulatory responsibility, environmental stewardship and customer service.  The RPS staff members are continually striving to streamline processes and offer the regulated community every opportunity for compliance with the regulations in the North Carolina Radiation Protection Act 10A NCAC 15.
