Build, service, and keep critical fleet equipment working safely and reliably across active civil and environmental projects throughout New England.

    About Charter Contracting Company

Charter Contracting Company is a growing, Boston-based, non-union civil and environmental remediation contractor with jobsites throughout New England. Our work includes environmental remediation, demolition, excavation, dredging, utility construction, and landfill cap and closure projects. We are seeking a dependable Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support our equipment fleet, with a primary focus on late model Komatsu  and Caterpillar machines.

    Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment used in demanding field conditions. This is a hands-on position for a mechanic who is comfortable troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related issues and who can work independently in both shop and jobsite environments. The successful candidate will help minimize equipment downtime, perform quality repairs, and communicate clearly with operators, field supervision, and the equipment team.

    Primary Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on Komatsu heavy equipment and other fleet assets.
Troubleshoot diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, powertrain components, brakes, steering, cooling systems, and related machine controls.
Respond to field service needs at active jobsites and complete repairs safely under changing site and weather conditions.
Identify the root cause of equipment problems and recommend practical repair options that balance safety, reliability, downtime, and cost.
Complete routine services, component replacement, adjustments, welding and fabrication repairs, and equipment setup as needed.
Read and use service manuals, schematics, diagnostic information, and technical specifications to support repairs.
Communicate equipment status, repair findings, parts needs, and anticipated next steps to the appropriate team members.
Maintain accurate service records and keep work areas, tools, service vehicles, and parts organized.
Follow company safety requirements, site-specific procedures, and environmental controls while working in the shop or field.

    Required Qualifications

Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction equipment.
Working knowledge of diesel engine, electrical, and hydraulic diagnostics.
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work through problems methodically.
    Welding and basic fabrication capability.
Ability to safely use mechanic tools, diagnostic equipment, lifting equipment, and service manuals.
Reliable, organized, and able to manage multiple repair priorities.
Ability to work independently and collaborate with equipment operators and project teams.
Willingness to work outdoors and travel to jobsites throughout the region in varying weather and site conditions.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

    Preferred Experience

Direct experience servicing Komatsu excavators, dozers, loaders, articulated trucks, or similar heavy equipment.
Experience with OEM or computer-based diagnostic systems and electronic machine controls.
Field service experience supporting civil, environmental, earthwork, demolition, dredging, utility, or landfill projects.
Commercial driver’s license, manufacturer training, or recognized diesel/heavy equipment technician credentials.

    What Success Looks Like

Equipment is inspected, serviced, and returned to operation safely and efficiently.
Repairs address the underlying problem and reduce repeat failures.
Operators and project teams receive clear, timely updates on equipment condition and availability.
Service documentation, tools, parts, and work areas remain accurate and organized.
