Lead Complex Civil Work from Kickoff to Closeout

Picture your morning: you open Primavera P6 to fine-tune the critical path for a multi-phase highway project. Field supervision checks in with you on traffic control sequencing, while the project engineer flags a drainage detail requiring a quick RFI. By mid-morning, you’ve aligned subcontractors, confirmed insurance compliance, and approved procurement for structures and paving operations to keep crews productive. Safety, quality, budget, schedule—every lever works in harmony under your direction.

As the Heavy Highway Construction Project Director, you are the central hub for heavy civil and highway projects—owning administrative, technical, and operational performance from notice-to-proceed through final sign-off. You ensure work is executed safely, on time, on budget, and to spec, while strengthening relationships with owners, engineers, subs, vendors, and agencies.

What You Will Drive

• Full lifecycle delivery of large civil/highway projects, meeting cost, schedule, quality, and safety objectives.
• Development and ongoing control of project schedules, including resource allocation and critical path tracking (P6/MS Project).
• Leadership of multidisciplinary teams—field supervision, engineers, and subcontractors—aligned to clear goals.
• Proactive risk identification and mitigation to protect continuity of operations.
• Implementation of safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards across all work fronts.
• Administration and enforcement of contract requirements for all parties.
• Efficient preparation and processing of change orders, RFIs, and submittals; strong negotiation to favorable outcomes.
• Budget ownership, cost control, and financial forecasting to maximize profitability.
• Permitting oversight and confirmation of subcontractor insurance coverage and compliance.
• End-to-end procurement of materials, equipment, and subcontracted services aligned to production plans.
• Coaching, mentoring, and performance management for project staff, including training opportunities and feedback loops.
• Primary liaison responsibilities with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders; facilitation of project meetings and clear communications.
• Monthly status reporting to leadership with transparent progress and issue tracking.
• Closeout leadership: specification conformance, punch list management, and timely resolution of outstanding items.
• Control of project documentation, including as-built drawings, warranties, and turnover packages; seamless transition and approvals/sign-offs by owners.

What You Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive construction responsibility, ideally with a general contractor delivering large heavy highway/civil work.
• Track record managing projects from preconstruction through final closeout.
• Proven negotiator with strong relationship-building skills across owners, subcontractors, and vendors.
• 5+ years in a supervisory capacity leading project teams.
• Exceptional multitasking under fast-paced, high-pressure conditions with uncompromising attention to detail.
• Proficiency with project management platforms, scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project), and financial reporting tools.
• Deep knowledge of civil/highway methods: grading, drainage, structures, and paving; roadway and structures experience strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with VDOT regulations, environmental compliance, and permitting processes.
• Genuine passion for construction and a desire to advance company success.
